New brake pads - how long until they bed-in?

Featured Replies

Almost 1000 miles ago I have replaced the front pads. Mine is not an RS, but the brakes were fading. I still had some good 5mm thickness of meat on the old pads. As the manual says they have to be changed when they drop below 7mm, I made the change.

Now I drive Ferodo premiers on the fronts.

Not sure if the RS have the same problem, but the "normal" fabias have the brake pads a little smaller than the discs. This leads in time to an upper lip on the disc.

The discs are still thick, they have 1.5mm until their time will come. Because of that lip, and the Ferodos beeing a little bigger I think, the new pads do not sit properly on the discs so a new lip is evolving. Practicaly it's a black edge near the edge, 2mm wide on the whole circumference, where the pads seem not to byte in the discs.

I could grind of the lip with a grinder, but I do not think that is a proper job. What do you think.

It is normal to have a lip on the edge of the disk. Pads bed in pretty quick, new discs bed in after 250 miles.

Yes it's normal, but because of that lip, near it the discs have a new black 2mm donnut, because of the new pads not touching that area properly. That is my concern. I want to use full potential of the brakes, not just 90% (of the disc area). 90 is exagerated as the 2mm is not 10% of the discs, but to get the picture ...

sounds like that is what you are going to have to do , otherwise the pads will wear uneven and you will eventually get a rusty edge to the disc where the pad hasn't pressed , just dont go to mad when you do it , and wear goggles and gloves:thumbup:

just had new pads and discs on my Peug 1.9 diesel van ......

and they were working great after about 100 miles

I did 50k on the old ones mostly driving on A/B roads and

country lanes and I dont have time for enjoying the views

wish I could tranfer them to my vRS ......1000% better than

the fabia ....... always p*sses me off when I get back after

a days driving in the van ........ and having to re ajust to the

fabia brakes

Ok, If I will get nice weather tomorrow I will do that. I will have to take the caliper and discs off the car since I cannot get on the back side of the disc. The visible side is no problem, but the back side has that metal shield near to the disc.
