Best for long distance motorway miles?

Featured Replies

Hi all, after some advice please- looking at Octavia 63 plate tdi currently. We will be moving soon and my annual mileage for the next year is going to go up to approximately 24k a year majority will be motorway. What is the real life economy of a 1.6 like? And is the 1.6 a reasonable choice or should I look at a 2.0lt tdi? Many thanks

When I got my 2017 facelift estate I was originally looking at the 1.6 ended up getting the 2.0 150hp, I do about 28k a year and I'm getting about 55-60mpg on a combination of motorway and main road driving. Personally I think the 2.0 is a better option not only is it more powerful it comes with a 6 speed manual and not the 5 speed in the 1.6 at least that's the case in Ireland.

Thanks for the reply, I’m considering DSG. We have that on our superb IV.

According to the age you’re looking at, the 1.6TDI’s had the seven speed DQ200 dry clutch, whereas the 2.0TDI’s had the six speed wet clutch DQ250. The DQ250 is, in my opinion, the better and more robust of the two.

I considered a 1.6 DSG, but the one that I test drove felt like it had a gearbox issue. It also felt a little underpowered.

I ended up buying a 2.0, which I think was a better bet, and still £35 road tax.

If you are doing motorway miles, get a 2.0 TSI or TDI (probably TDI IMHO). A TDI 190 with a 7 speed DQ381 box is the sweet spot on the MK3's - cars from 2018-2020.

For me, my 1.6 DSG ticks all the boxes, but I don't tow and there is usually no more than two persons in the car. It's also very reliable.

If you've got a family then the 2.0 is probably a better option

I would go for a 2.0 every time , I've had one 1.6 & two 2.0,s.

As good as the 1.6 TDI is it's not as good as the 2.0 TDI .

Fuel consumption wise the 2.0 may well do slightly better than the 1.6 simply because it's not working as hard.

The 2.0 has a lot more oomph behind it than the 1.6 , as a result it's much more enjoyable to drive.

the age of car your looking @ the difference in road tax is what ? 20 £..
