Superb 2.0 140 BHP - Hesitation when cold

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Was just wanting to make a post just incase anyone has ever had something similar and might know where to start looking or what could be my issues.

I have a 2013 2.0 TDI CR140, on about 107k.

Having a bit of an odd issue when on cold start, between 1600-2000 rpms. Most noticeably in 1st or 2nd the car seems to hesitate when revving up. Sort of like on off on off on off, only on partial throttle or what I would consider standard throttle when cruising up to speed. As soon as you're past 2000 rpm, goes away.

If you give it the beans and full throttle it to get up to speed, its absolutely fine, and once it gets up to temp she runs spot on. No issues at all.

Seems to be sporadic but I have noticed it more recently.

Running a diag, no codes or anything. I'm not 10/10 mechanically minded but I know what I am looking at for most things.

Any thoughts or ideas would be great, have got it booked in for a proper diagnostics I just know if cars if you ignore the problem its most likely going to get worse!

Best shot would be to check whether the Throttle Position Sensor holds a constant position under acceleration.

Do you drive often long or short distances? In case of mainly short distances, it is likely your injectors are dirty and may need a good clean.
You can try this by adding you bottles of injector cleaner to a full as tank as a curative measure, when this solves the issue, add every 6K miles one bottle of this fluid to a full gas tank. If this does not resolve the issue, you may have them professionally cleaned.
Since you are not an experience DIY repairs man I´d recommend you to seek for a diesel specialist to do this for you.

Replacing the injectors by refurbished or even new ones belong to the options.

Thanks both, seems to be a bit hit or miss when it wants to do it.

I've had the car 5 months and done almost 13k in so she doesn't get driven on short journeys very often. I have another car that I use to tootle around town so the derv only gets used for long journeys to and from work and around.

I'll get some additive to see if it improves anything. Cheapest thing to start with anyway!

Could potentially be the Throttle Body, they get very clogged up. Before and After of mine I did the other day.20250806_114427.jpg20250806_122551.jpg20250806_122602.jpg
