Loud metal scraping noise from inner CV joint (?)

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I noticed this metal scraping sound (front left side) a couple of weeks ago when driving in first gear into my mothers carport. I though I had driven over some metal that was stuck under the car, but after a quick inspection and

my mother telling me it was probably a stone stuck in the brakedisc, I thought nothing more of it. I have noticed the sound a couple of more times when in low gear but it went away quicky. So fast forward to last sunday

I was visitng a friend in the capitol and when driving to his place the noise suddeny became very noticable and constistent, like people were turning heads noticable. This time I was driving in 3rd gear.

I lowered the windows while driving and my reaction was to park the car as fast as possible. It's not a constant scraping sound, it goes with the wheel spinning. After I parked the car I jacked up the car and removed the

wheel and checked for stones but found none. When I grabbed the brakedisc and turned it with my hands I could hear a noise comming from the inner CV joint, though my friend said he heard it from the outer CV joint.

I had to take the train home and I need some advice on how I can bring my Skoda Yeti home! Do you guys think that it would be a good idea to change the whole driveshaft? And could I do it myself? I have done some hobby-repairs

over the years, and I've been told that changing the driveshaft is not that difficult and does not require any special tools. If my friend is right and the sound comes from the outer CV joint could that also mean that is it the wheel bearing that is broken?

It's a 2012 Skoda Yeti btw.

I you need any more info please let me know!

Hey buddy, I've had the same noise in mine since I bought it 5yrs ago, but sounds more like a clanking, like metal hitting metal, on a slow turn. I've replaced everything (including the drive shaft) on the front end over the years but it still happens for time to time. My recent conclusion is that its the wheel nuts (they might be too long) hitting the splash guard as the wheel rotates. Let me know if you get to the bottom of it.

Hi Rob, maybe a picture might help here. As, I have never heard that before.

A picture of what? Mine looks the same as yours

I’m going to the capitol today and I will record the noise and upload it here later today 😉

Well for one, take out one or more wheel bolts and measure it, check to see if its been touching anything. (photo)

Second, as I stated I have never come across a wheel bolt protruding so it hits the splashguard.

To test the driveshaft CV joint, full lock & slowly drive forward. If you hear a steady clicking noise that could well be the joint.

Tyr this again on the other lock.

A good DIY tip, jack up car with both front wheels free. Full lock one side then the other. 1st gear at idle.

Try & record it.

Hi I was going to reply to suggest that it could still be a stone trapped on the inner side of the disc, but it looks like you have found it !

A CV joint just doesn't make that kind of scraping noise, unless maybe the boot had split and every last trace of lubricant had dropped out. Its much more common to get knocking or clonking noises with excess wear, especially under load and with steering lock applied.

Hi Mellowmike. If it makes you feel any better you aren't the first one caught out. It happened to me a few years back - frightened me to death the noise it made. But a hint I picked up on this forum sorted it for me - to drive backwards quickly which, if the gods are smiling on you, will dislodge the little blighter and all will be well. Glad it was nothing more serious.

Hehe, the sound is horrible! In this case the stone was lodged in the caliper, so I barely saw it! I will try reversing quickly the next time this happens. Here is the recording, better late than never 😂
