Overnight battery drain

Featured Replies

This is an evolved fault which appears to be worsening. The battery is fine. Have left that disconnected overnight and it has held its charge. This means something is draining it when everything in the car is off. Is this a known issue or, is there a likely part which could be at fault please?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Factory radio been changed at all usually first thing ?

Thank you, gav-is-con. No, but it is blinking. Is that significant?

That could be as a result of battery drain. Could try disconnecting its fuse leaving off for a few days see if that improves battery situation.

Thank you. Have removed the fuze so we'll see.

Are you sure the battery is ok. Have had a few that will hold charge if disconnected but lose charge quickly when connected due to bad cells. What voltage are you getting from battery.

Thank you, Alisdair. Battery and alternator have been checked and are fine. Now have a period when I don't need to use the car so can leave the battery connections (with the radio fuze removed) and see if there is a drain on the battery.

Thanks again for your comments. So far it appear that the radio console was the culprit.

There is still a drain of 0.8A when shut down. Radio fuse is out. Any other obvious culprits please?

Had a volvo 940 that used to drain overnight. Tried all the usual but no joy. Eventually traced it to the alarm siren battery backup but couldn't find fuse as nothing marked for charging battery pack (probably for security) so traced wires/followed wiring diagram and it was being trickle charged via the clock on dash but not enough to blow fuse but batteries were shorted out and had leaked/melted so were trying to charge up constantly.

Thanks, Alasdair.

The amperage when the car is shut down and the interior lights are selected 'off' is 0.6A. Checking both fuse boxes the only item causing a drop was 12 the Central Locking System in the dash console fuse box, but that would still leave a drain of 0.3A. Initial check in the engine fuse box showed 0.2A on F24 the Control Unit for the CAN databus and 0.1A on F16 the Windscreen Wiper and Signal Control Arm. However, when returning to check those two there was no reading on either.. However, in principle, those three items would make up the 0.6A overall drain. All very curious
