new to me Karoq 1.6tdi dsg

Featured Replies

Hi, just bought my first ever Skoda. Come from a sportage of 4.5 years and never had an issue. My new Karoq, which is a 2016 1.6 tdi dsg has adblue, which my 2017 diesel sportage didnt. The range for the ad blue is saying 4500 miles. Ive bought some wynns additive on the suggestion of a friend, which helps stop it from crystallising in the tank.

My quesiton is, its suggesting to get to full, i could put 1-1.25 gallons in the tank. Im wanting to put in this additive, so can i just bob 5 litres in there now? i wasnt sure if you had to wait until a specific level before its advisable to add more. Its literally so i can get this additive in there to make myself feel better, but needs to go in a full tank.

Thanks in advance

Adblue comes in 10L (~2 gallons) container and it is just over £1 per litre. Not worth putting in a small quantity, just fill it. If you want to use additive, put it in just before it is full.

Just get the Adblue level down lower until it needs filing and put in the Additive then the quantity Adblue required.

The car has probably gone near 9 years already without any additive.

Just top up with Adblue, I wouldn't bother adding the 'Snakeoil', unless it makes you feel better 🙂

Yeah. It literally is to make me feel better. I’ve seen it tested and it does stop crystallisation. I’ll let it drop a bit further.

Another of those amazing things.

AdBlue being a product that VW has the licence for and was what required VW, Mercede Benz & BMW to conspire over tank sizes and VW to have the Illegal Defeat Device.

AdBlue a product that might well be used in Light goods, HGV, & passenger vehicles globally.

Yet,

no special additive already added versions on sale for the UK driving public.

You can fool some of the people some of the time but maybe not all the people.

No Heavy Oil / Derv / Diesel already with the MILLERS already added, but you can get Diesel with different detergents / additives, maybe a different cetane, and maybe not.

...........

I would run a new to me car on the regular fuel, or Super Unleaded Petrol or Special Diesel and be sure all is well before messing with 'Special bottles of stuff'.

Same with AdBlue, since when the system goes wrong it is not cheap to fix.

Absolutely, the 'additive' market is as profitable as the vitamin supplement market.

Both unnecessary, and promoted purely by the manufacturers, creating a need where none exists,to sell the solution.

I’ve always put regular diesel in and some additive now and again. It’s probably in my head, but in my last car. It always sounded like the engine ran quieter on a tank with additives in and the mpg on the dash always tended to be a tad higher. With the ad blue stuff. I’ve seen that it breaks up any crystallisation. I can see the argument with diesel additives being “snake oil” as what feasibly can a 200ml bottle do in 60 litres of diesel. But I think it’s highly reasonable to think that an additive in ad blue can change the chemical state of the fluid to be more stable. However I’ve also seen some reviews saying it’s caused issues.

I’ll take the advice on here and leave it be. I see no point fixing something that’s not broken.

GULF Super Diesel could really perk up some diesels, especially older, and really have them blowing out soot and 'rolling coal'. I considered the extra cost worth it. It became less available as some Gulf filling stations stopped getting it in. My local still did but the one at Aberdeen Airport I would use when heading north and coming home stopped having it. When I was towing with my Shogun the difference using it was very noticeable. In my 11 year newer BMW I felt no difference as a totally different kettle of fish. Can of worms. PS. BMW uses lots of AdBlue. My 2016 Alhambra used very little after 3rd time the tank was filled. It was LITTLE VW Group Cheater. Defeat devices model and it was terrible for the DPF blocked light coming on after it had done 40,000 miles or so. 60 plus mpg easy. Use around town for a week. Not even 25 mpg.
