MGP Woes :(

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have 63 plate Skoda superb 1.9 cdti DSG with 200k on the clock and I have been trying to work out what my MGP is as it seems to be drinking diesel even more than usual.

I only do about 7 miles to work pretty much half town and half motor way and im getting on the computer around 39MPG ish
At the weekend I went Grimsby to Pickering mix of motor way and then some A and B roads and I was around 51MPG ish.

I could really do with some help / advice what the problem could be?
These MPG are from the on-board computer, I kind of have worked out that I can nearly get 45-50miles for £10.

I do have an ODB reader with a switch on a USB lead to a laptop but no software, and I go have access to a topdon DOB scanner.

Is this the best I am going to get? Any help would be great thanks.

The 2.0 TDI is very likely Regenning more than it used to and using more diesel.

If it is getting 39 mpg over 7 miles from a cold start that sounds pretty good.

Im not sure how accurate these are.

You put in fuel, so brim and drive and then brim again.

Easy to know how many miles it goes per litre or miles per 4.546 litres it gets.

39mpg on a commute to work 51mpg on a journey at the weekend with more free flowing roads. I am struggling to work out what the problem is.

Did it used to read more on the commute?

Hi stonekeeper.

I was more enquiring should i be getting more MPG compared to others.
Or was there anything i could do/try/check to improve my MPG.

Ty

MPG between drivers in the same vehicles is down to Drivers manner of driving.

Better anticipation, smoother accelerating and less wastage in braking for example

The 'problem' is that the engine is stone cold for at least the first 2 to 3 miles of your trip - plus you are probably pulling heat away from the system for heating.

The engine will be running fairly inefficiently until it has fully warmed-up.

Read up on Hypermiling.

Morning Evo

So i was on fumes and put it £77 fuel in and reset comp and trip
Currently on 333 miles ish and we ard heading fast to the red, i think i will be lucky to make 400 miles!

Would love some ideas what could be wrong or done to improve things

Ai appears to agree with what most of the replies so far have said.

Putting 77 litres in when almost empty and guessing at the outcome is not really helpful.

Accuracy requires full to full refueling and monitoring to get a "real mpg"

@VooDoo Sorry but £77 of fuel means nothing as no idea how many litres you get for that where you buy it.

But if 144 pence a litre £6.55 ish a gallon) you got about 11.8 gallons.

Less than 53 litres.

So that is not filled right up is it?

Has it got a 60 litre fuel tank?

333 miles divided by 11.8 is 28.2 MPG, but you are not empty.

Fill it up and see once it shows only 40 mile range maybe.

The guessometer in the car is not a reliable way of achieving an accurate MPG.

It shows what has happened over the period between resetting and adjusts as you drive

I once left Lancashire with a full tank with a guessometer reading of 436 range

When I got to Frankley services my expected range with the fuel not used was 500 miles and i had travelled over 100 miles.

After two weeks driving around Devon When i filled up to return the predicted range was 450ish

Not a superb but a 2.0 diesel with a dsg average to and from work was 34-35 mpg getting to 60+mpg on the motorway

That is 'Range / guessing'. Shown on driving and recent efficiency.

Unlike with some EV,s which maybe when at 100% show the range based on 4 miles or maybe 5 miles a kWh.

Others might actually show based on the actual average 3.1 miles. But charge to 100% and it is back to what gets published as WLTP possible range.

As to the Mileometer and tyre size, pressures being different, you sometimes get a few tenths of a mile difference showing between setting at the start of a journey to zero and the total miles that the many mileage shows.

I tend to start my Smart Watch or phone on a Trip App and see how many miles the GPS says i have done compared to the vehicle showing.

thanks for all the help and info so far.

TBH i didnt even think to make a note of how many liters i got for £77

I will fill again make note of liters added and start the proces again

Thanks for advise

Fuel calculation average is more accurate with higher figures - but you don't have to completely run the tank down to the reserve - ensure the vehicle is reasonably level each time you fuel, brim the tank to 1st click of pump nozzle shut off, record fuel quantity and odo reading.

Do the exact same the next time you fuel.

This will give you an accurate fuel use figure and will also allow you to gauge the vehicle fuel computer accuracy.

These "newer" diesels are like that. City/mixed is usually under 40 mpg and highway like older ones.

More weight and slower heating than example old 1.9tdi with lighter car.

My 2.0 manual superb goes about 44mpg highway based mixed driving or my short 12km work trip.

More city and it goes 38mpg.

Long highway trips and we are even 57mpg

Even my older 2003 passat 1.9pd did that way. 1996 1.9tdi passat took 51-47mpg at city based.
