Front bearing replacement

Hi all. First time posting here but I've used this forum for years when stuck on different repairs. Now it's my first time replacing the bearing on the front right axel and I'm a little stuck.

After waiting for tools and additional parts I've finally come to the end (I think). I've used the bearing intallation kit to push the bearing into the housing. The same as tjos video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeGE8nkgbIE&t=515s Unfortunately a neighbour who was also tinkering with his motorcycle started revving at the pivitol moment I think I should have heard a click. I can't tighten the tool any longer, it doesn't seem to be in contact with the flange any longer.

Heres some photos of the space between and at the back. I didnt think to check how it looked before taking the old parts off but what do you guys think? Does it look like it should it go in any further? What are the consequences of it not being in far enough? Am I gonna have to do all this again? Will the abs sensor not work properly?

Hope ye can give me some tips before putting this all back together!

Yep did my sons a while back and didnt hear much of a click but yours looks just like his did.

Hi, I’ve just posted a similar question, I’m doing mine tomorrow with a new hub as well, did you grease the hub before inserting the bearing? If so what type?

Think I used a very light film of copper grease as it was all I had at the time. Had to spend a fair bit of time cleaning up rust etc from grooves in bearing mount etc. Old one came out with a fair bang. Thought I had snapped the bearin tool. Took a fair bit of force to release it but it had been in for nearly 20 years. New one went in fine and has been no prob since. Broke the ABS sensor when removing it but had ordered a spare anyway. You will need a new hub bolt if the bearing doesnt come with one as they are use once and throw away. Remember to tighten/torque bearing hub when car is off the ground.

@Alasdair1 thanks for the info, ive got some multipurpose grease so ill apply a thin layer, ive also got a new abs sensor, literally everything getting changed!

Yeah, I used some all purpose grease too. Changed the abs sensor too because it broke off, changed the outer steering tierod because the bolt broke, replaced the mounting bracket thing because the bolts were so rusted I had to take the angle grinder to it. So it was a long process with multiple new parts but now it's back on the road until the next issue rears it's ugly head 😂

I just used some HT Bearing grease on the bearing carrier/knuckle as it does not have any added metallic content which might annoy the ABS wheel sensor, used Moly grease on the forcing screw thread.

I got lucky and only broke the ABS sensor on the second side - the RHS, increased the slot in the bearing rear plates to try to avoid that next time if ever that comes, also putting a lot of effort into clearing rust etc from the inner side of the hub carrier/knuckle improves your chances of avoiding bending/cracking/breaking the ABS sensor - buying Bosch ABS wheel sensors from places like PIM saves a lot of money over what I did and panic and buy from ECP, buying from VAG as you'd expect is a lot worse, from memory almost £100 4 years ago - and VAG dealers didn't hold any in stock, probably no call for them at that price!

Good call re nonmetalic grease. Never thought about that. Luckily I used very little so no probs with the ABS sensor. Remember mate used too much on sparkplugs and ended up with no spark
