Don’t depend on the keyfob battery dash warning

Featured Replies

My car was on the second key battery replacement and each time the dash would warn me it was low. I put a new battery in only 2.5 months ago.

Saturday eve i went out to the car and nothing. No red light etc. i took the battery out and refitted and it started working again so i thought it might have been just a bad connection. Battery seemed clean and nice and tight.

Two days later the key is still working fine but i noticed the red light that flashes stopped working. Checked the voltage on the key battery and it was too low. Replaced battery and all is fine again. Anyone else experience their battery fail without a dash warning? I obviously had a faulty one because it only lasted 2.5 months.

No, but my stand-by keyfob battery managed to self discharge when stored in a drawer. It only ever comes out when the car is being serviced so I don't have to remove the daily keyfob from my key ring. The car was 2 1/2 years old when, after the keyfob was put away a year previously, it wouldn't unlock the car. That battery was replaced by Skoda as the car was going in for a service anyway. The other keyfob battery raised an alert on the dash shortly afterwards and I replaced that one.

I rarely use the second key fob (stored in a faraday pouch), but after replacing the battery in the one I normally use I continued to get the dashboard warning. Tried several different batteries, no difference. Out of desperation I tried the second key, got the warning so changed that one too. All fine with both keys!

Two years or so later, same thing. Change the battery in the primary key, still got the warning. Changed it in the pretty much unused second key as well, all fine.

BTW, I always use Panasonic CR2023 batteries. From my experience they last longer than other brands.

The battery that just failed that lasted only 2.5 months was a Grundig. The original battery was a Panasonic.

My wife and I use the car equally. Hers has gone over a year without a problem - mine starts warning after 6 weeks. Last time I left it warning me for 2 months before I changed it. Most recently it gave the first warning when I got into the car to take it for its software update recall. I told them not to change it but they phoned up at lunchtime to tell me it wouldn't do the update because the key battery wasn't strong enough. They changed it though I wasn't charged for it and the update worked.

I've tried Faraday pouches but not impressed. The car unlocks when I take the bins out but doesn't relocked without me taking it out of the pouch.
