The buyer has to pay £80 transfee fee on to their own car. Any other dosh is yours. So say you get £250 back, the buyer ends up paying £330. I think the "sale" involves as a minimum, the certificate to be handed over and I think there's a section to complete a change of owner / car, which needs sending off with the £80 cheque, and I think then you get another certificate back. Works a little like a V5, but involving money.

I put mine on Ebay when I got disheartened with being pulled over all the time it got to 55p.....

What are you doing to get offers like that? I'd sell my plate in an instant for anything over £500.....

Easiest way is to put your plate on retention (if it isn't already) and put the buyer on as a nominee. This will mean he can put it on a car registered in his name. It will cost £105 if currently on a car or (I think) £25 or maybe £80 to add the nominee if already on retention.

(If you buy a plate from anywhere other than the DVLA, you will only show as a nominee. A lot of number plate brokers advertise plates that still belong to the DVLA. Once you order it, they then buy it, putting you as a nominee and make a health profit!)

Once the certificate is returned the plate is still yours at this point. When you then put the plate on to a car in the name of the nominee he will get a V5 (log book)with his name and plate. You now have no legal claim to the number. Sorted.
