2012 Skoda Superb: Horn and Steering Controls failed after Ignition Barrel repair

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice regarding my 2012 Skoda Superb. I recently had to replace a broken ignition switch/barrel myself after a garage delay. Because the barrel was seized and wouldn't turn to position one, it was a difficult job that required a bit of "persuasion" with a grinder to get the old unit out.

I successfully rebuilt the ignition and the car now starts perfectly. However, I have two issues:

  1. Airbag Light: This came on because I cycled the ignition while the airbag was disconnected. I know this needs an OBD2 reset (VCDS/OBDeleven).

  2. New Issue: After three days of driving, the horn and steering wheel media controls have stopped working entirely.

I suspect I may have damaged the clock spring (squib) during the struggle to get the ignition housing off or during reassembly.

My main questions are:

  • Does this sound like a definite clock spring failure?

  • Is this a job most independent garages can handle, or does it require specialized programming that only a main dealer can do?

  • Thanks in advance for any help, Iain

  • 3 months later...

I realise this is an old thread, but if anyone comes across it, having had three failed clock springs (don't ask) this 100% sounds like the clock spring.

My symptoms were the same, airbag light, buttons on steering wheel not working, horn not working.

My usual mechanic couldn't replace it as it needed to be reprogrammed with a Skoda computer, but if your mechanic had the computer it would be fine. Make sure they do actually program it (one of mine they forgot to, and the buttons didn't do the right things).
