Furball5000 - 2006

Featured Replies

Wendy & I have just completed the Furball5000 in the trusty Skoda, no problems with the car, Embarassed a few of the so called quicker cars & had probably the best motoring week weve ever had, It was purposely not publised beforehand to keep details away from the foreign authoriities which seems to have worked.

Below is the official itinary, most of which we completed but due to time restraints a couple of bits got missed.

Day 1

Carving through the Champagne region we arrive in Reims for lunch at the historic motorsport restaurant. We'll have plenty of time for photo opportunities at the Grands Prix Ruins.

The ruins of the old pits and grandstand lay on a 2 mile straight that is perfect for high speed runs. It looks great on camera and the noise as the cars fly past on full chat echos beautifully off the grandstand, though we obviously frown upon such behaviour.

We then press on via Dijon to our overnight stop at Bourg-en-Bresse, just north of the French Alps.

Day 2

The day begins with a short drive to the city of Grenoble where we pick up the start of the N85 - the legendary Route Napoleon. Widely regarded as one of the world's finest drivers roads, the Route Napoleon combines wide sweeping ribbons of tarmac with mountainous hairpins and incredible views all along it's length.

Lunch at Chateau Arnoux will be a great way to catch your breath before the real fun starts! This is where the Route Napoleon gets really interesting.

Passing Castellane we head into the Grand Canyon du Verdon and the incredible roads that surround it (recently described as 'the most demanding road in the world' by Jeremy Clarkson and 'God's own driving road by EVO').

After our excursion we again pick up the N85 and enjoy the remainder of the epic Route direct into Cannes for a run down the Croisette.

Day 3

You have options here: either lie in and sleep off the excesses of the night before and take a gentle 35 mile cruise to Monaco or get up earlier and take the long route, through possibly the finest roads in the world.

We'd strongly urge everybody to join us as we head back up the Route Napoleon to a lunch stop high in the Alps at the ski resort of Valberg. From there we head east to tackle the monumental Gorges de Daluis and the Gorges de Cians.

We aim to arrive in Monte Carlo for mid-afternoon and gather in the harbour for guided laps of the Grands Prix circuit. Upon checking into The Mirabeau Hotel you will be presented with the Carte d'Or and the privileges which that entitles you to.

Later that evening you will enjoy a meal at Monte Carlo's finest restaurant, buried high up in the cliffs overlooking the entire C

Any pictures Stu?

Sounds like fun,How many gallons of fuel? and how many miles?

Average MPG for the trip ?

5000 Kilometers in 8 days, Average MPG, absolutely no idea, lowest mpg for a run was 17.7, highest cruising in Switzerland was 33

No speeding tickets, couple of narrow escapes & the once over getting into switzerland both times

Mate got pulled for 120kph through the Tunnel at Monaco, Speed limit is 50. On the spot fine of 22.5 Euros, He offered the Policeman another 60 Euros for a couple more goes, guy had a bit of a sense of humour failure but that was all.

In Northern France the police are really after foreign drivers so stick to the limits if you go, it was crawling with Police (or were they after us ??) 160 kph in a 130 equated to 90 Euro Fine, A friend saw the Police fine chart & over 160 it goes up quite a lot

Interestingly a girl at 160 MPH in a Lambo in Italy equates to a severe chat & no further action, wonder if a Skoda would have got off ??????????

Any photos online yet ?

Theres a 'was it you' out for you atm.... saw you as we were chugging up the hill from dover in our cadet minibusses.

Were you at the service station just the other side of the tunnel on the Saturday? (15th) I saw lots of the cars there, (TVR's Porches, Z4 and Lambo).

Yep, sounds like our lot, there was also a TT there not with us but one that Jabba had put the IHI kit on :) :)

Stuart

I've done the Route Napoleon a number of times, albeit on motorbikes..........what a truely fantastic piece of road this is, as are many other routes in the region.

If any of you are ever in this area, take time out to do the N85!!

If you can ever find the Gorges de Daluis and the Gorges de Cians. These are truly the greatest roads to drive I have ever found

Weve got a holiday in France to come later this year but we will take the Superb for that so yes Europe once more this year but I dont somehow think thats what you were asking

As far as "Enthusiastic Motoring Holidays" is concerned the plan was to make this the last & I was going to sell the car but it was just sooooooooooooooooo much fun I think I might just do one more next year :) :)

I am more jealous than a jealous man with his jealous head on!

Start saving for next year, if you dont think your cars up to it rent one, one guy rented a Z4 for under a grand fully inclusive of BMW recovery insurance etc. By the time you have paid for tyres, brakes & anything else that 3000 hard miles will do to your pride & joy + Recovery insurance its not such a bad deal bearing in mind you can rag it to death & not worry about the stone chips!!
