felicia intermittently cuts out

Featured Replies

Firstly hello there this is my first post but have been on here a while (hello fluffmeister)

i have a 1999 skoda felicia 1.3mpi lxi and it intermittently will cut out at low revs. Sometimes it will not restart straight away and has to sit for a minute or two - can be embarressing on roundabouts.

The car has less than 38k on the clock and other wise is in mint condition.

Has anybody any ideas where to start looking??

btw just back from prague and have some pics of the skodas i will post when i get a minute - quite intrigued by the felicia vanplus!!!

I had this exact same problem in my felicia 1.3mpi lxi. It is caused by a bad connection to the ecu. I wedged the ecu with some rubber "stops" to reduce vibratoin/movement. This did not compleatly fix it but it only did it over really rough ground after.:o

Id say change the coolant temp sensor first and see how you get on. I would think its either that or the crank sensor.

i am a little dim on the skoda engine so where would i find coolant temp sensor and crank sensor??

cheers Lummox (Techie)

Coolant temp sensor sits in the top of the thermostat housing just to the right of the cylinder head. The crank sensor site just tot he right and down of that in the top of the gearbox bell housing.

Hello

Hey, this is my cars original problem. its over fuling due to the temp sensor thinking your cold. I have posted this before somehow and all the work I have doneon my skoda. Well yea without a doubt I would go with the water temp sensor housing. it cost me

lajonel, how come your battery is on the opposite side of the engine bay???
The car will be LHD. The UK price is circa £50 for the housing complete with thermostat and temperature sender.

ok coolant sensor changed now fault has come back again - i dont drive it everyday so dont know if it made any use - so how easy is it to change crank sensor

check the inlet manifold gasket. Spray WD40 or similar around the gasket, if the engine note changes or the pool of WD disappears then there is an inlet leak. It's a simple check that proved very worth while on my 1.3 MPi.

I had a probelm with my 1.3Mpi felicia - only it was that it just wouldn't start (Ran ok for 1 month from purchase but then just refused to fire one day). Towed it into an independent garage that had diagnostic equip and it showed the crank sensor was duff. So I got a new one and the 'fly lead' adaptor, mines a 1997 vintage, it appears a mod was intoduced later hence the need for the fly lead. This was duly installed, the car had other sensors showing faults which were reset (i.e ecu memory wiped clean) and now the car is running superb. All in cost me £120 to fix but worth it - don't guess when it comes to electrics on modern day motors just get em plugged in and find the fault. Thats my best advice.

Worth checking a few simple things. I'd be thinking things like corroded contacts on the CTS, dirty butterfly valve and maybe leaking inlet gaskets as suggested. Might be none of them of course but all easy to check. Are the plugs sooty and is the economy poor, these would suggest an over rich mixture.

Hi!

I had the same problem with both my Pick-up's with the 1,3 MPI engine. At low rev the engine sometimes stopped. A mechanic had a look and he removed the air intake on top of the engine and wiped clean the "lid" to the "carburettor"...don't know if it the right term.....not english.....

Well this magic cure took away all my problems!

That sounds like it was a crudded up butterfly valve/throttle body bore which can cause the engine to stall at low revs, I think it's quite common. You should avoid any damage when cleaning it, like leaving score marks with something sharp. I cleaned the valve and throttle body bore with an old toothbrush and carb cleaner which seemed to work fine. However in my case the actual cause of the poor idle was a leaky inlet manifold gasket, which is also quite common it would seem.
