Condensation in N/S Headlight

Featured Replies

Anyone else suffering with condensation in their car's headlights. I mentioned it to the dealer before the warranty ran out , but he was like no, it’s just because of the winter weather, however it still persists and my car goes in for MOT and on the “health check “ the technician notes condensation in N/S headlight , replacement £1400 . I’ve never seen any other Superb with this problem anyone got any ideas as to a cheaper fix than £1400?

Not sure if this would work, but it did on on my Saab… I got those sachets of desiccant you get with electrical items, tied them to strong thread and put them into the base of the headlight through the bulb hole. Fish them out once the moisture has gone. I guess you can then seal them with silicone after.

Hi,

It's a known 'non-issue'. For several years now headlights on VAG cars are not airtight anymore. This enables air circulating behind the headlight glass, which unfortunately allows condensation happening.

Dealers don't fix it anymore. It disappears when the air in the headlights is dry enough, or when outside temperature gets warmer.

A solution could be to remove the cap at the back of your headlight, insert a tampon in your headlight, put the cap back in place and remove the tampon the next day. This may sound odd, but it's a tip used by underwater photographers to avoid condensation in their water resistant camera cases. Desiccant as suggested above, is an alternative but bags are usually small and may not absorb humidity completely in one go...

Nevertheless, whatever the method, it won't prevent condensation definitely. It may come back.

FYI, no LED headlight is sealed. They don't produce enough heat, so every single LED unit will have some sort of breather/membrane design.
