it was done 27/10/2005 had 40441 on clock (previous owner) at elmside garge (skoda) now has 47.6 ish book says doesnt need doing till 50441 or 27-10-06

Thats funny because mine has almost the same symptoms but 10k less... not due till sept.

Does it really need servicing now?

Sounds like when the service indicator was reset, it may have been set to kilometers (10k km is around 6,200 miles). Car won't need servicing until 10k miles or 12 months so just make sure they reset it properly next time :D
