Engine sounds wrong following service / cam belt change

Featured Replies

Had the cam belt and water pump done as well as oil and filter change. Local garage. Now the engine sounds wrong. Superb 2L diesel, 4x4 L&K. Jan 2014.

Sounds rougher, but in particular at idle, when lifting foot off the accelerator while driving along, and when accelerating away sharply from standstill (at busy roundabout etc) . It doesn’t sound obviously awful, and from outside sounds fairly normal, you need to sot in the cabin to hear what is wrong, but to my ear it is definitely not right. It is like an older diesel engine not the refined vag diesel engine it was before. Garage insist they did everything properly and can’t hear anything wrong.

I’m wondering if they got the timing set up wrong? Used wrong oil (can that cause such an issue though?) or something else? Don’t think i am imagining it. Has been driving okay, noises aside.

Sounds like you are going to have to go see another mechanic to get a diagnosis. What else were you thinking you can do? Are you a member of the RAC or AA who could arrange an Inspection?
