1.0 tsi ticking noise on start up

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Recently picked up a 2017 1.0 TSI.

Every time I start the car there’s a noticeable ticking/rattling noise that lasts around 45 seconds then stops completely. Happens on every start, not just cold. Car runs perfectly once warm with no issues at all.

Has anyone experienced this on the 1.0 TSI EA211 engine? I’ve read it could be the Turbo actuator rod linkage?

Car was serviced by Skoda main dealer a month ago.

Any experience or advice appreciated.

Sounds like a bit of valve train rattle.

Change the oil and make sure grade is correct.

Maybe a noisy cam phaser or something but seeing as it goes away, probably just a bit of wear.

Hell, plenty of engines used to tick and rattle when cold. My old 18R toyota motor was terrible for it. Still ran fine, just rattled when cold

& that oil grade used i hope is VW504 00 / 507 00. 0w 30 FS III or 5w 30 FS III and not VW 508 00 / 509 00 0w 20 FS IV.

Almost certain it is the infamous wastegate rattle, it sounds exactly like how my start ups sounded before I mounted a clip on the actuator rod to limit the play (and thus minimizing the rattle). What you can do is (when cold) grab a hold of the actuator rod directly after starting the engine, you should hear a difference as in the rattle will disappear and appear when holding/releasing the rod.
