1.6 MPI and 1.6 SR - Are they the same engines?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Does anybody know whether the 1.6 SR engine (found in the Octavia I) and 1.6 MPI engine (found in the Octavia II) are the same block?

From the information which I have gathered online, both engines have the same 8V technology, produce around. I have sent a mail to Skoda's global communications department but as of now, I have not received any confirmation.

Hope to hear from the Skoda experts here. :)

Im not 100% sure but I think the MPi is a newer version of the 1.6 SR, which is a newer version of the engine in my Polo.

I didn't realise an 8v valve petrol OctyII was actually available. I thought the only 1.6 was the 16v FSI but there you are, you learn something new everyday.

My only question is... why?

"cheap as chips"

Entry level cars are more popular in Europe.

My only question is... why?
For markets outside Europe, perhaps, where highish-octane fuel isn't available, or simpler maintenance schedules are required?

Especially that If you buy 1.6 FSI instead of 1.6 MPI 8V, you'll pay 1 million HUF (about GBP 2500 or EU 3700) more for 10 more BHPs and a few Nm of torque but You must use the 98 octane fuel which is about EUR 1,2 or GBP 0,83 per litre but our earnings are very far from Western European or UK salaries for the same job. What's more, You can buy Octy2 with 1.4 16V 80BHP engine too!

The 1.6MPI was avaliable in the UK until recently when it was discontinued, probablly for emission b0llox. Without Metallic Paint, you could grab hold of one for £10,750, Albeit with the early ones witout Air Con. I have driven both the 1.6MPI and FSI and I would never pay the extra money for the FSI. The 1.6MPI sounds better, Attains optimum fuel economy/performance on regular fuel and feels much faster, if not actually being faster. The only criticism is a very short 5th gear. 80MPH is 4,000RPM:O It was also avaliable with a Tiptronic gearbox like all other Petrol Octavias (Except 1.4)
