A recent study suggests that only one current mainstream car manufacturer will survive over the next fifty years and therefore will achieve world domination in all markets. Who do you think it will be and what factors do you think would influence consumer demands?.

When China gets in on the act they all better watch out

aren't renault/citroen/peugoet funded by french government grants? if so surely they cant go under. i think the consumers will demand more fuel efficient or alternative/hybrid/electric vehicals because of spiralling fuel costs.

Renault is part owned by the french government.

I reckon it's Toyota

Am not convinced by the study myself...Ford and GM no longer make any real money on cars anyway, but their finance divisions pull in strong results.

Also a lot of manufacturers such as Honda and Toyota are very large companies, of which car production is just one minor area - so these could keep turning out cars for little over cost purely to bolster brand awareness for other products...

Rob.

As has been already said, once China starts a successful car production industry they'll be no stopping them.

we've seen how the korean market has improved so much over the last 3 years...china is on its way up there so much technology being churned out and for such a huge country it will grow very fast.

but the vast amount GM and VW own i dont think they will be gone.

My money's on Honda or Toyota.

ford for me, a well established firm that make cars for the whole world but also make many other sorts of vehicles for all sorts of markets.

every car they make now is a reliable decent car that looks alright and is well priced. the tesco of the motor world i feel.

Which department would Tesco sell the Ford GT in then? :P

Would be in their Finest range, I'm sure ;)

Just as long as you can return it if not satisfied with it breaking :P

another vote for China.

What about the Al Quaeda mobile

:orb_lol:

As someone who works inside car manufaturing I dont see the Chinese taking over the world. Certainally not Europe and US markets anyway.

They may sell in massive numbers but it'll be in their domestic market.

I agree with the comments about Ford and GM, equally those on other makers. I dont see how any one manufacturer could become a dominant party worldwide.

Toyota are huge, they have the cash assets to buy GM outright. This year they will be confirmed as the largest car manufacturer on the planet and not only that, but unlike GM (who have previously made more cars) they make profit. GM have lost billions recently, it cost them $2 Billion to get out of a tie-up with FIAT recently  I also read once that Toyota has enough money invested that they could pay their employers a full salary without them having to make cars.

That

My money's on Hyundai.

They are already one the worlds biggest companies selling the biggest diversity of profits, from oil tankers and cargo vessles down through trucks, cars and constuction equipment to air conditioning and tv's.

And it's all owned by one bloke!!

voted hyundai too. Their cars are getting better and are good value for money plus you can now get one with a 10 year warranty, five years free servicing and 0% APR.

I think they are going to turn the car market on its head when people look at what they offer compared to the VW's and Ford's of this world.

Another vote for Hyundai. Not only are their cars progressively better as every year goes by, they also own Kia who are making massive improvements in their cars and are the fastest growing car company in the world.

GM will be bust/bought out within 5 years IMHO.

Going for FIAT myself
