smoking

Featured Replies

quick one... don't know if it's the weather but my vrs belches white/grey smoke every time I start up from cold or hot. Never noticed this before. It smokes like all VW diesels when accelerating hard but never noticed it on startup before. Done 28000 miles now. Hasn't had a fuel filter change but I did put in an air filter 5000 miles ago. Any comments????

mine does this on startup! mine is only 4 month old

So does mine. NORMAL. ITS A DIESEL!!

Sounds to me like a bit of water in the system, You could try draining the fuel filter if you can on this one, or replacing it. That would be my first port of call.

My Octy smoked a little grey rather than black on startup, but a new fuel filter come service time fixed that.

I don't think they are expensive and a new filter (i'd get it from a dealer or buy a quality brand eg mann/fram one) can't do any harm.

When you say belches, is it just a puff on start up, or huge swirling clouds? If it's just a puff, it's just it being a diesel. If it's more, I'd get it checked out :D

I would say white/grey smoke on start up would warrant investigation as i was taught white smoke = water somewhere, black smoke = good diesel. Mine has always done it from cold but black!

If its still under warranty it wont hurt to have it checked out for your peace of mind but i'm certain there's no problem. I'm on my 3rd car with the tdi130 motor they've all done this and i've never had a problem with any of them. The colder it is the more lumpy and smoky they seem to be initially but it clears up immediately.

If you are doing short journeys or slow driving in traffic ....then it

could be a build up of water ( condensation ) in the rear silencer .......

take it out for quick blast up the road and clear it out of the system ...

then see if the problem goes away ........

My 1.9 Tdi (60k) sometimes used to give a slight puff of white/blue smoke on startup but it stopped doing it when I changed the fuel, air and oil filters at the same time. I am now also running on 5w30 oil rather then 0w30 oil (both fully synthetic) so I suspect its the slight increase in oil viscosity thats improved things. Try a slightly different oil viscosity (staying within the specs of your engine) next time you do a change.
