Strange engine noise at low revs in VRS

Featured Replies

Hey,

I have a '04 Fabia VRS and it sometimes makes a strange noise at low revs. It sort of sounds like the noise you can make by blowing around the edge of a bottle, low and humming. It comes up for example when you quickly raise the revs to around 1500 in neutral, but not always. It changes into a sort of resonance if revs are increased slowly. Recently I have heard it while driving as well, though it is hard to separate from tyre noise.

Has anyone else noticed this? Should I be concerned? Haven't been to a dealers yet but am planning to go once I get the time.

Thanks,

Johan

Check if the engine cover has worked loose, mine started vibrating a little while back, slapped it back down and it's been ok since. Have a quick scan around the enginebay for stuff that's rubbing perhaps.

How many miles have you done and is the suspension etc all standard?

I've checked all the covers etc. and they seem to be in place. The sound seems to be coming from the right side of the engine bay, possibly from something that looks like a diesel pump. Could it be possible that the pump would be the cause and if so, how serious of a problem could this be? The sound has been there for a few months now but it seems to be more regular these days.

The car is left-hand drive, completely standard and has covered 45000 miles.

i'd let the dealer have a listen , especially as it seems to be happening on a more regular basis , better safe than sorry

it's strange that, whenever i've ever taken a car back to a dealer they allways have selective hearing.

Different dealer if they aren't helpful. If you can hear it and they claim they cannot, it's worth a switch ;)

i would but it seems that the dealer to which I refer has ceased trading. i can't imagine why????

I'd check my engine oil level, top up if required, also how many miles has your oil done.

Hi Johan,

I have a Fabia 1.4 16V and have noticed a similar noise at 1500 to 2000 revs where somethings vibrates in the engine bay. Its only really noticable when the car is stopped and I rev as driving noises seem to drown it out. I pointed this out before buying the car and was assured it was okay. I would presume it is something loose and as you said imay be to do with resonance. Please post again if you find a remidy to the problem! Thanks,

Mike

Hi there, I have also noticed a similar problem in my 1.4 16V fabia, where at 1500 to 2000 revs there is a vibrating noise from the engine bay but above or below the noise stops. I agree it is probably to do with something vibrating at a resonant rev range. If you find a solution please post it!

Thank you,

Mike

Air resonating in the airbox as you put your foot down trying to get more air through the intake???

A little update. I went to show the car at the dealer and they concluded that the noise most likely comes from the EGR or somewhere else in the vacuum operated system. Nothing to worry about they claim but the dull noise is beginning to get on my nerves... Has anybody else had problems like this?

Thanks for the ideas.
