How to clean leather steering wheel?

Featured Replies

Just wondered - the steering wheel is the only thing I've never properly cleaned.

Are there some recommended products to remove the grease / nourish the leather without damaging it and/or stitching? Also bearing in mind that it's something that mustn't have any adverse effect on long-term comfort.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Wet sponge for me.

baby wipes .....brilliant on leather seats too:)

Cheers guys

You can get the Zymol leather cleaner from most Halfords... It's really good, gets all of the shine off the steering wheel and returns it to the matt look that it came with from the factory.

Tesco dashboard wipes work great, ive found they dont make the leather feel slippy afterwards like most leather cleaning wipes ive used before.

I'm still getting over the first question. Clean a steering wheel? Why? Doesnt a quick wipe with a cloth do it?

Johnny...

The leather steering wheel is meant to have a matt finish to it.

Oils from your skin, or moisturiser (if you're a metro, or a girl), or the grease from that doner kebab you battled with on the way home from a night out all make the wheel shiny.

A decent leather cleaner will remove all the oils etc from the leather that make it shiny... Restoring the "as new" look to it.

Depends how anal you are about keeping your car clean I suppose :)

Yep... I just use the same leather cleaner that I use on the seats and that works great. Although I have to say that I did once use a baby wipe (greasy marks.... not Kebab!) and it cleaned to amazing levels!!

Baby wipes! Ha, i'll have to give that a go. We've hundreds of packets of the f**kers in our house

Surely its got to be Patchouli oil for leather. Any old rockers will know that one

I've used warm water with washing powder to good effect.

Does it work on the steering wheel as well? Pray tell:D

I tried using some ordinary wet wipes on my old golfs steering wheel, and was surprised at the amount of muck that came off. And it left no residue, i suppose they would be similar to baby wipes.

I use baby wipes on mine, works very well, leaving a clean surface without residue, tack or grease. Nice matt finish :)
