Budget motoring here I come!!

Featured Replies

Well, on the 1st September, I collect my 56 plate Corsa!

No, I'm not joking either.

Was initially tempted by the 0% finance, low deposit, free insurance etc deals, but managed to get a great price for a cash sale. £2500 off list, so £9535 - can't beat that... its at a loss to them, but matched a broker price, on the premise that the additional bonus they get should wing it for them.

I enjoy driving my bosses one, and its soooo frugal. Pretty nippy, fine on the motorway too. :)

Its a 1.3CDTI SXI+, 3 door in misty grey pearl - the last one EVER to be made to that spec.

The spec includes white dials, half leather sports seats, air con, leccy mirrors and windows, remote locking, tinted windows, alloys etc - it really is fully loaded.

I just prey that its reliable... :o

I've had 2 Corsas, Tom and they were actually pretty good. My Mum has the petrol SXI and its actually great fun to drive - will be interesting to hear how it compares with the Fabia for cornering ability as I find it turns in quite neatly and is almost "fun" to drive.

Seats, dials and steering wheel are nice too.

www.corsasport.co.uk may be worth a look.

Goochie - would have put money on you having the first reply

Cheers fella, will have a look over there - although tbh its not going to be modded or owt - trying to fall out of love with cars, until I'm debt free atleast... :)

It is good fun, seems nicely built. Nice turn in, but quite a bit of roll - although comfort is great.

My only concern is the quality - the 1600 mile demo I tested already had scuffed interior door handles

good stuff. vauxhalls are quite well built!

Same here mate about the BUDGET motoring. Im purchasing a flat in the next few months, and my Occy vRS is currently forsale to be changed for a Renault Clio either 1.2 or 1.4 what ever comes up!

I just aint going to be able to afford to run the vRS with Mortgage bills and Powergen putting up their prices!!!

Good luck with the new motor!

Must be a trend - Budget motoring for me for the next year till my insurance woes are cleared up.

1.4 Renault Megane for me.... been driving it for 2 weeks now. No squeeks, no rattles and nothings fallen off  (must be some kind of freak Renault)

i might sound stupid here but your after budget motoring so buy a brand new 10K car

Probably means the Group -1 insurance, 10p a year road tax, 100mpg....... Budget running costs would be the most appropriate phrase

i quite agree but buying a £500 car would mean that over the next 3 years or so you would have saved thousands so surely thats budget motoring :D

Very true, but if you do a fair few miles issues such as warrenty, lack of MOT, modern saftey features, no worth while mods, general comfort etc... come into play. Which a £500 banger wouldn't possibly have.

Like I said budget running costs would be a better term to use.

you can get a scorpio granada for £500 205bhp 2.9 24v V6. all mod cons, super reliable, super safe.

yeah it would cost more to run but the fact that it was £9,000 cheaper gives you a massive head start ;)

Have to agree to differ on this one I think... At the end of the day if you have the cash to hand to buy new, but wanted to keep your monthly motoring costs at a minimum say so you could aford a mortgage, I know what I'd do ;)

Like I said, understand where you are coming from with this.

Blah blah blah blah blah Corsa!

Blah blah blah blah

Vauxhall you say? And what do they do again?

Apart from the new car having some residual value - so it's not £9k, it's £9k-residual value. At three years old it could well be worth £4k, so that's a £5k difference.

Compare the insurance, tax and fuel costs of the new car versus the above old car, and the potential cost of an expensive old car going wrong, and I doubt you'd see much change out of £5k.

Plus I suspect for a lot of people the insurance on the Scorpio would be more than £500 - so, you're paying more to insure the car than it's worth, which doesn't make much sense...

Rob.

Or how about the best of both worlds - a 1-2 year old Corsa. It's done the bulk of its depreciation and has all the mod cons and warranty of a brand new car ;)

Enjoy the car anyway, Tom :D

Chris

Cam belt change for less than a tenner - thats budget motoring.

I have a Golf GTI 1.8 8v 1986D that I was using for a week... but it killed its water pump after 5 days of use. Whilst its only peanuts to maintain, and I can do the work myself, I just cant have a car that isnt guaranteed to start every morning. And tbh, when you do 25k miles a year, I need good mpg, a good warranty, and comfort. The insurance is peanuts too - and as said, it has value, sure depriciation is the biggest cost, but I'd rather have that as a guaranteed/predictable value, than numerous unexpected maintenance costs tbh.

Oh, and it is nice to have a brand new motor on the drive!

Don't forget the amazing spec - leather  all the toys... the golf doesnt even have leccy windows!

It was my intention to only spend £6k, but that buys a 2 year old Corsa, and very few even have air con, so I decided to indulge... he he.

Well let us know how it compares to the Fabia, Tom.

I have to agree with the folks that say "buy a banger"...

I take the point about residual value etc, but the biggest problem I have with new cars is the monthly repayments...

My current runabout (e30 touring) cost me £300 18 months ago. I've spent about £550 on parts (not all NEEDING replaced), £900 on insurance and £2000 on fuel/roadtax.

that gives a total of £3750. Basically the car has cost me £208 a month to run.

£208 is just the monthly repayment on a new/nearly new car, before the thing turns a wheel.. factor in running costs/tax, servicing and depreciation and you'd be shocked how much even a good deal and frugal car like you got will cost.

I know that for folks with little time/mechanical knowledge,a banger can be a money pit, so there is a place for newish cars.

Just that in your situ i'd have bought a pug 106 1.5d for £600 on an R plate, and paid the £250 insurance...

Hope you enjoy the car.Nothing nicer than new car smell:thumbup: .

Have to say,I am never buying a new car again.Ever.Will always be three years old.Well, maybe 2years if a nice new vRS comes up in the future:)

oh yeah, meant to say-enjoy the corsa:-)

I would have been tempted by a Fabia sport tbh.

I would have been tempted by a Fabia sport tbh.

IMHO the Corsa is a much nicer place to be, the servicing is cheaper and the spec is higher.

I think Tom's made a good choice.

And then someone drives into you, the thing crumples like a coke can and the savings you made on motoring can go towards a nice coffin... :)
