Budget motoring here I come!!

Featured Replies

you say that but i had a pug 106 and tried argueing with a lamp post and very little damage was done to the car actually. stood up quite well i think :)

my mate also had a 106 at the same time, about 12months newer than mine and put it through a fence and into a little tree type big bush thing and didn't do that much damage.

sorry but buying a 10 grand brand new car isn't budget motoring, buying a £20 diesel nova like i did a while back is cheap motoring, fairly confident that if i hadn't treated it like a complete ar$e and upped the fueling/boost it would still be going strong now, if a little smelly. :)

Your lack of mechanical sympathy amazes me sometimes ;)

just having a quick look on auto trader you can geta 53 reg 1.3 cdti with everything but the leather from about £4500 upwards with about average miles. thats more like budget motoring ;)

why thankyou, such a nice thing to say

and you've never seen me driving the works van :D

Depends on your budget.

And buying a £20 diesel Nova is all well and good, but if you keep both cars 'til they expire the £10k car will probably last a lot longer, and won't be a poorly-specced shed... :)

Rob.

Corsa are very nice to drive. They feel much bigger then they are. My dad bought an 05 1.2 twinport which is pretty pokey for 5k with 60... yes 60 miles on the clock. It was a cat d write off I believe. Was damaged coming off the transporter but fully repaired by the garage that bought it.

he doesn't know the meaning of the phrase mechanical sympathy

he's never been in your works van when it's moving forward at ~30mph in reverse with great plumes of smoke billowing from the tyres...he's never been in your works van when you've bounced it off the limiter in every gear, just to show me what the limiter was like in the van...he's never been in your works van when you've locked the rear wheels up by putting it into 2nd at ~40mph as an alternative means of slowing down...etc etc

When are you picking it up, Tom ?

:orb_lol:

you can get a scorpio granada for £500 205bhp 2.9 24v V6. all mod cons, super reliable, super safe.

Yours might be reliable but a used motor is always a gamble.

As far as super-safe goes I'd be surprised if you'd walk away from an accident with the Corsa in question - modern cars are bloody tough compared to old ones and they're getting tougher every year.

When Euro NCAP was launched (around or even after the Granada) it was stated confidently that no car would attain 5 stars - you'd struggle to buy a new motor that doesn't get at least 4 nowadays. In an accident your 'indestructible' old cars (volvos and mercs) fare very badly agains modern metal - I seem to see quite a lot of real-world accidents (so does everyone else who covers lots of miles I guess) - I'd no way consider a 10yr old car having seen what I've seen.

Ah, but that doesnt have any warranty left... a MAJOR factor when I chose mine.

I really did want as much warranty as possible... its all about financial security.

I think driving around in a new Corsa is well worth a few quid a month over a crappy old 106D tbh... the Corsa is acutally refined - the engine MUCH quieter than in the vRS, its a lovely little car.

I did consider a Fabia Sport, but the Corsa won in EVERY category except boot space.

For £9500 for a brand new motor, I dont think the Corsa can be beaten. I considered the likes of Aygo etc, but the only real contendor was the Clio Campus DCi Sport - but my dealer wouldn't give me a good deal, and wouldn't let me take a test drive unless I paid a deposit...

When looking at the bigger picture, 70mpg, 20k service intervals (1st service will cost £121), peanuts insurance... I think I did well. Find me another car with the spec of the Corsa for the money BRAND NEW... they just dont exist.

I agree with everyone about me saying this is "budget" motoring. I could have saved another £120 a month by my calcs by running my golf - but it wouldnt take long for that to be sapped up in fuel bills, hiring a car when it breaks - oh, and its a 20 year old bangor...

Did you consider the Proton Savy ? ;)

i agree the fabia 1.2 sport doesnt come close to the 1.2 corsa so I would have gone for the corsa over the fabia any day

I did, and there is a dealer in the town where I work... but god NO. Also considered everything from the Daihatsu stable, but no.

I think the Corsa made the most sense - I haven't lost the will to live just yet.

On the subject of Proton , I think the Gen2 looks like a really nice car.

No idea what it's like to drive but the prices are good and it looks like a really good quality product

The 9k service intervals put me off...

They are fairly nice inside too :o

For those that think the Corsas seats are pants... They are far superior to the Fabias!

I've only seen promo photos of the SXI+ seats, but heres a couple of pics robbed off autotrader

They look dead comfy, and the half leather looks spot on to me. The steering wheel is nice and chunky with leather too!

:eek: Surely not?!?! :rolleyes::rofl:

Chris

so how much we betting you don't see an average of 70mpg over the first year then tom? :D

you name the bet and i'll match it :)

we will never agree on this though tom as if your aim to save as much money as possible (which i think is your reasoning) then buying a brand new 10k car doesn't fit with that plan, if your not after saving as much as possible then please ignore my previous posts on this matter :)

Nope, just a balance between comfy, pleasant motoring, and budget running costs. :) Could keep the GTI and be a good £100 a month better off... but that just wasnt an option imho.

This is the only misty grey piccy I can find... Never seen one in this colour on the road!

It has a lovely pearl tint to it

10638.attach

Bet i can get within 2 mpg in my car... and drive faster at the same time ;)

EDIT: and have better residual costs :D

Had a 'crappy' 106 D myself (picked up an N reg with 100k on it), as a budget buy some years ago (on that note, a 'budget buy' in my opinion is sub-2k and crossed fingers). Great MPG even when caning the **** off it. A bit on the slow side though, so caning the **** off it was the only option.

I can't see those seats look more inviting than my full leather though Tom!

Good luck with the Corsa though Tom, sounds like you got a fair deal there.

Did you not consider the Fabia 1.4 TDi? Surely similar price to your Corsa through a net broker?
