This may sound obvious but when i plug the Vag com lead in does the engine need to be running or not, i guess it does but just checking.

Depends what you want to do For reading fault codes and changing codings, only the ignition needs to be on but for taking real time stats of how the engine is behaving, you'll need the engine running!
