[Hi. Can anyone tell me how much oil I need to buy to replace the oil in the gearbox of my Fabia 1.9 TDi? I intend to use fully synthetic GL5 75W 90. It`s just reached 50,000, so I reckon it`s due for a change

I would budget for at least 3 litres of the gearbox oil to compensate for spillage etc and to have a bit for top ups if necessary.

Golf TdI gearbox needs 1.9 to 2 litres according to Haynes.

I agree the car will be a lot better for it though.

Thanks for that. Synthetic oil being expensive, I didn`t want to buy more than I needed. Also I live in the middle of nowhere, so can`t just pop out for some more!!!

I once changed the gearbox oil in a VW Jetta at a similar mileage and with the same fully synthetic oil you intend to use. I also added Extralube's ZX1 treatment to in the required proportion to volume of oil.

Feel sure the car accelerated better and definately more economical. Gearchange wasn't bad to start with but was much improved, particularly from cold.
