Innacurate Speedo

Featured Replies

I know that speedos can be unaccurate at high speeds, but 120MPH on the clock is registering as 106MPH on GPS. My car has Standard factory wheels and tyres.

I was just wondering if thats really far out or just normal innacuracy,

What's everyone elses like?

I don't know the exact figures but that would seem fairly normal.

Remember that with all the scameras and talivans around the speedo in all cars must read fast otherwise everyone would be getting flashed at, say 34mph when there speedo indicates 30 mph. Lots of people would then be trying to sue the car makers.

It's for this reason that always feel fairly safe to pass a police motorway patrol at an indicated 80 as I know (hopefully:O ) that I'm actually doing about 72mph.

yep the higher the speed the bigger the gap between

speedo and reality

mine is speedo 100 gps 93 on a private track of course

The furb reads a constant 4 mph over upto an indicated 78mph, wouldn't know above this ;)

My Octy 1 vRS gives about a 5% over-read, but I think up to 10% is not uncommon. So 120 indicated would really be 114 (5% over) or 108 (10% over).

My furbie is on 215/40/17 and the GPS and the speedo read the same...On the original wheels/tyres 205/45/16 the speedo was 3mph over the GPS....Gps-70...Speedo-67

your gps read faster than you speedo?? then something is quite wrong with your car mate. apeedo should never over read.

Sorry Bengie Written it the roung way round :o . Just re-read the post..Glad you're paying Attention.............. Cheers Andy

my Octy is out by about 10% compared to Sat Nav. Think this is fairly standard

Same here but it also varies with speed. Mine is out by about 10% around the 60 mph area but is more accurate at higher speeds although I have never driven the car over 100mph so not sure what my speedo reads when doing 106 on the sat nav. The way the speedo 10mph increments reduce by 1/2 at 90mph probably doesn't help gauge accuracy either.

It's unlikely your satnav is wrong and your speedo correct because you would need to be going flat out to reach 120mph.

In the Furby with standard wheels, an indicated 140-142 is 131 on the Road Angel, which seems about right, but I can't see the speedo being 20mph out at speeds under this, even on an Octy :s

The dash speedo will always read higher than actual. AFAIK it's a legal requirement.

However, you know the way you can get "actual speed" up on the climate control display (as described here).....

How accurate is that ?

My speedo seems to be consistently about 5% above the number shown.....

I have found the speed reading on the climate control to be spot on with my Sat Nav. I don'y think Skodayouth has climate control though.

I find that the Octy II's speedo is more accurate than the furby Vrs.

I thought that the Octy II felt better than my Mondeo which was 8% out at pretty much all speeds.

But I was following my mate in an old Corsa other day and I was reading 100 when he was reading 90.

AFAIK speedos cannot read under (at 30mph or above), but can read up to 10% over.
