Poor door seals?

Featured Replies

I have noticed a number of times on my Octy that when I get into after it has been raining that the rain water has managed to get over the door seals at the bottom and onto the carpet.

I took the attached pictures with my phone this morning (so not vyer good quality), but it should be possible to see the 'water marks' in both pictures - although easier to spot in the second.

The car is parked on a pretty flat driveway. I am pretty sure I have noticed a similar type of leak on one of the rear doors, but I can't be 100% sure now.

Is this a common issue, or just one of the special friday 'features' my car has?

Cheers,

Matt

Niot a common issue on the Octavia though it has happened on fabias in the past.

I assume the resolution is to pop new door seals on? It also looks to me as if the seals end up squashed the wrong way and end up directing the water into the car!

Is it because the seals are poor or is it because water is leaking out of the bottom of the door trim and on the wrong side of the seal?

I had that problem (door trim). I replaced the foam membrane behind the door skin and so far the problem hasn't returned.

mmm, good question!! How can I find out though??? use a hose pipe and squirt around the sides of the door (but not as high up the glass? If water appears then the issue is with the seals, but if not, then it is probably water leaking down inside the door (from the window seals?)

I had the door card off a few days ago to install an alientech thing, and the inside is clad with a tin foil, and then clear plastic sheet) - pictures now attached.

Can't say i have ever noticed that even after washing the car :S

If that foil stuff aint sealed it will pi55 in the car no troubles.

The door needs to be sealed water tight, no holes in the membrane

The pictures at the start of the thread are exactly the same as the problem that I am experiencing :thumbdwn:

As far as I can remember, it only started after I had a fella fit new speakers where he cut holes in the skin:eek: (he pointed out that there would be no problems!!!)

Having taken the car back to him twice, I have now had to return the car to the dealer to fix (probably take new spekers out and fit new door skins:mad: ) then I will have to visit a different installer to fit speakers with a spacer (I guess...) that won't interfere with the door skin and try and get my money back, in some form via my credit card company from the dodgy fitter...

I've noticed this problem in my vRS that I recently bought. If the car is left overnight in the rain I can guarantee that opening the drivers door will cause trapped water to flow off of the door sill. Placing my hands on the carpet in this area confirms that they are wet. I don't know if the speakers have ever been changed in my car prior to me buying it. Will this be covered by the Skoda approved used car warranty? If so I'll book it in for inspection.

I have just realised that a puddle in the back of my vrs is due to this. I cannot work out how the water gets under the door. Problem is my car is on a slope and the water drips inside from under the door.

I'm not aware of any speaker replacement.

be very good to find out what is causing this.

In the boot, check the seal on the piece of plastic where the lock goes, check the screen wash for the rear screen is working correctly and that the pipe by the CD changer in the boot isn't leaking.

Check the hinge area is free from debris, check the condition of the seals and if required wipe some silicon lube over them

I have this exact problem in the drivers door also, never had the door off or speakers changed from what i know

however the seal looks like its deformed on the bottom (attatched to the car)

its a pain and i want to fix it but have not had the time. I assumed it was just a dodgy seal but it looks common

My car is now booked in to Skoda Edinburgh this Tuesday to have this looked and and hopefully fixed under warranty.

let us know the outcome as i would be interested, however i will have to fix it myself as there is no warranty for me

Cutting / removing the backing of the speakers is one of cause of water ingress. Not only is water getting into the car from around the speaker area, but your brand new speaker is also being drenched by water.

Something else I noticed whilst thinking about this (not that I have a water leak). There are sealing strips along the bottom of the door itself (not the usual one round the door frame) on my car. Is this normal, and, if not, why not, and which is correct type questions?

The car went into the dealers today and they have told me that the door membrane is ok and is not the cause of my problems. They have suggested the problem may be due to the door been misaligned which they have now corrected and asked me to monitor the situation to check if it is cured or not. Would have thought they could do so themselves by hosing the car down.

Unfortunately I will not get the car back till tomorrow as they are also fixing a occasional knocking noise which was coming from the front of the car. For now I'm driving a 1.2 Fabia which is actually quicker than I expected it to be.
