312mm Brakes???

Featured Replies

 Can anyone inform me, of what is the smallest size wheels which will fit on a car if 312mm brakes are fitted.

I have the Octy L&K, and love the wheels on them, as they are different, so didn't want to change, but they are only 16".

If anyone has the answer I would be very greatful.

And also, is there a groupo buy coming up at any point, and how much do the brake kits retail for normally??

Where is the best place to buy them from??

Thanks.

The 16s are fine, although they are the smallest that will fit (so make sure your spare is 16" too, or you will be swapping front-to-rear if you have a puncture).

Have a look at http://www.golfturbo.com although I'm not sure if Steve is still doing the kits or whether he's associated with Briskoda.

What engine is your L+K?

It's a 1.9 TDi. Oops. Does that make a difference? Does it use different hubs to the 1.8T?

I had a Black 1.9 Tdi L&k Estate but sold it for the Furbie vRS. I must admit the wheels were Ace. Wonder what they would look like on the Furbie.....Now There's a Thought....................:).............Anyone any Piccys??

Yes, the 1.9TDi has FSIII brakes meaning to fit 312mm brakes you would have to fit new bearing carriers from a 1.8T or vRS and new bearings.

Does this make it a big job, or would a capable person, who knows a lot about macanics be able to do it (Dad radiotwo), this is a job for you).

Thanks.

Chris

You need a press to do the bearings

Its a biyatch and pretty much doubles (or more) the cost of the 312mm conversion. New outer hubs and inner hubs will be circa £400 new, then labour to join the two and refit on each side. Then the 312mm carrier can be fitted and the kit fitted.

I had to go down this route with my 1.9 TDI (ex-FSIII brakes using) Fabia.

decent discs and pads can fix any slight issues you may feel you have IMHO

Indeed. I ran DS2500 pads and 5.1 brake fluid on my old 256mm system, and it did improve it a lot. Still, it in no way compares to the 312s.

My TDI 110 was 280mm FSIII have changed to a brembo version of the OE discs and some nice Pagid front pads and pagid standard rears. Doesn't half make a difference to how the car pulls up :D

How much difference does it make changing to 4.1/5.1 over dot 4 for pedel feel jason?

I wouldn't say the feel changed all that much - It was just better when it was used a lot. Boiled slower and so performance stayed truer for longer. Having said that, I've been using standard dot4 on my 312s since they were fitted and I've yet to even come close to cooking them. Ultimately I suppose performance is dictated by pad/disc contact, and less so by the fluid. :)

Fair enough, still doesn't feel quite as razor sharp as it did when i got it with just under 20k miles on it, even after brand new everything on all wheels.

Ahh well. I have to say that i think the FS-III is a pretty good standard brake system.

I was always recommended super 4 dot fluid over 5 dot 1 in the Scooby so I've stuck with that ever since. I've yet to boil any brake fluid

Chris

Super DOT 4 (aka 4.1) is the same as DOT 5.1, there is a cross over in boil over points etc. Most 5.1s have got renamed as Super four so people dont get confused with DOT 5.
