Hi Folks,

I have a 2000 W Reg Octavia 1.8 20v SLX Auto Estate which I love but recently it has developed a curious instrument fault. Seemingly totally at random but always after the car has been driven and then parked for a short while, the instruments don't work. Everything else, warning lights etc are fine but spedo, rev counter, fule and temp just don't move. After a while they then flick on, then off then on again, finally settling to on after about 5 or six attempts.

This has completely defeated the AA who spent 2 hours on the problem waggling fuses, relays and any stray wires he could find, all without result.

Before I start a main dealer investigation, has anyone any ideas?

Also, now I've started, the rear window winder appears to have packed up. Is it easy to replace and does the door panel come off easily.

Apart from that the car is excellent although I want to change it soon for the 2 litre elegance - just a bit more power and goodies.

the windows are controlled by the central convienience unit aren't they?? and also some of the instrumentation too i believe?? might be worth having a diagnostics check done first to try to find out the problems
