Dashboard Lights

Featured Replies

Tried to fix something - made it worse. :(

The problem: A number of the lights that illuminate the dashboard when the headlights are on don't work anymore. It's on the speedo side, and all but one are out so now when I go faster than 30mph I have to squint to see tghe speedo. All the other lights are fine.

On examination: The lights in question are surface mount LED's and very tricky to get to. The solder appears OK and anyway it seems unlikely that there would be a dry joint on multiple LED's. Connectors seem fine.

The bodge: I had a prod with my multimeter at the power connector (LHS as you take the pod out) and I identified the one(s) that go 0 to 12V when you turn on the headlights. I found a 12v LED, stuck it behind the speedo, and wired it directly to the corresponding pins on the circuit board.

The outcome: Oh dear. The new LED is much dimmer than it should be and does bugger all to solve the problem. Now the airbag light has come on and doesn't go off.

The back pedal: De-soldered and removed unsuccesful LED and wires and reinstalled pod. Closed eyes, crossed fingers, grimaced and turned on the ignition.

The result: Airbag light still on. Goes out a bit after engine start but then comes on again. Stays on. Oh poo.

Please help.
