1.6 FSI - Timing belt tensioner problems?

Featured Replies

Am Looking to replace my 2000 Octavia 1.9TDi SLX with a new, or nearly new one.

Have an offer of an ex-Skoda 1.6 FSI Estate for a sound price, with low miles BUT....

According to 'Honest John', there have been a number of timing belt tensioner failures of late....

If that's the case, I'll get me a 1.9TDi again, methinks...

Any thoughts???

Not heard of that myself from either VW or Skoda.

He mentions this is the 1.6 16v engine, is there another in the range?

According to the brochure there's a 1.6 MPi but it looks like an 8 valver.

Lummox, do you have contacts with VW/Skoda?

Cheers

P.S. the cost difference between the ex-Skoda UK 1.6 and a new 1.9TDi would take 20 years to repay in fuel terms!!

normally the timing belt tensioner only breaks if it is fitted incorrectly, the most common problem with tensioners is when the nut that secures it to the engine goes loose and the belt goes slack.

should I go for a 1.6FSI then?

2k more for a 1.9 TDi and 4k more for the 2.0 TDi...

post up a poll in the general car chat section!

Well, I think I've almost answered it. Just need to know what the hell HJ was referring to.

Don't want to buy an engine with Timing belt worrries.

BTW the prospective 'new' car has only 1k on clock so is practically new!

Any thoughts?

hj knows everthing and nothing!

i would say the choice of car depends on what you want to use it for!! if your are doing lots of miles then go for a diesel, if you want a nice quiet motor go for the fsi jobby

TT,

Have just read that the FSI engine needs 98 RON petrol, not 95. All calculations are now invalid if that's the case. 1.9 or 2.0TDi. Depends on the wife!

nah! they say that but it will run when sipping on the 95 brew! just with a slightly reduced output.

1.6 FSI hat NO timing belt, has chain. HonestJohn data is a bit "out-of-reality" sometimes... 1.6 16V 105 BHP was NOT mounted in Octavia, just Golf and Seat

You dont need to use 98ron. 95ron works just fine.

I thought the FSI engines were only in the A5?
