Knocking from steering....

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have a 2001 RS and over the past few days I have noticed a knocking or clunking coming from the steering somewhere , when the car is moving and I have applied some lock (its fine when wheels are straight) At the same time as the clunk is heard , a small movement or bang can be felt through the wheel , altho its probably only a few mm it moves. Does anyone know what this could be? Maybe something worn in suspension or steering? The car only has 9600 miles on it , and I never noticed this until after my local council put down 13 new speed bumps on my estate , these plus the other , older bumps on another road means that i am going over 34 speedbumps a day  (to work and back) in a journey of only 2.1 miles each way!! Could this have deranged my steering or suspension??

Hi Duncan,

when I first got my vRS it would always make a knocking sound when I turned right at the end of my road. I doesn't do it now but I think it was one of the front springs reseating itself in the strut.

As you've got a lot more speed bumps to negotiate now may be it's something similar.

Cheers.

Adrian.

Hi Duncan,

I wonder if it is the road humps, are they those horrible ones that seem like you are driving up and down kerbs.

I think that if they have caused damage to your suspension/steering you should be able to claim for repairs (if not covered by warranty) from the county council or whoever it is that is responsible for the highway where you live. There have been several cases of this in herts and the authority paid up as the road humps were poorly maintained.
