Vibration in the 4th Gear

Featured Replies

Hi guys:thumbup: ,

I have a Y reg 2001 Fabia 1.4 Comfort and have noticed in the two months of having it that when in neutral and reving between 1000-2700 revs there is a vibrating noise from the engine department which doesnt particularly bother me.

However, I have noticed that when reving in this range of revs (1000-2700) and being in 4th gear, the gear k n o b vibrates. If I release the gas pedal or push the cluch down the vibrations stop, but as soon as I accelerate with the cluch out it vibrates again. :o

As soon as the engine is out of 2700 revs at about 44mph in 4th the VIBRATIONS (edit) also stop. :)

Someone I know mentioned that it could be a bearing of some sort but it went over my head.

Should I get this checked out ASAP or is it just a "thing" that can be ignored?

Also, the garage gave me a 3? month / 3000? mile warranty (I will have to check the numbers tbh) - do you reckon this will be covered or is it "wear and tear"?

Thanks everybody!:D

Mike

Its not because someone did leave a vibrator in the 4th gear was it? ;)

On a more serious note, it sounds to me a little like the flywheel vibrating, although it should do it in all higher gears if that was the case. Lets see what mr Lummox says. :)

Quick update,

Its still happening but I have discovered that if I firmly put the gear in then the vibrations are significantly reduced. Its rare that I can get the gear in the right place for it to not vibrate but it is possible. Any more ideas peeps?

PS, thank you for the suggestion devonutopia:)

Lets see what mr Lummox says.

Last time I asked a 'tech' question it was NOT answered because it was not put in the 'Ask a Tech' area. Dont expect a PM reply either!!!

Oh I am sooo sorry I dont get a chance to answer all PM's etc (called having a life and a five week old baby, plus I do actually work for a living).

And I answer plenty of questions outside of ask a tech.

As it would happen on this particular problem im not sure what advice to give as its not one i've come accross as far as I can remember and its a little tough to tell over the internet. I'd get it checked out personally.

You have a PM Ross!!!:D

 Still clueless people.

Someone suggested today that it might be the camshaft bearing or something along them lines causing vibrations thus causing the 1000-2700 rev noise. Is this a load of cods wallop?

Really need some advice guys because Im really worrying! :o

Thank you

*** EDIT ***

UPDATE : Took the car in just within the 3 month used car warranty last week. The mechanic listened to the noise and suspected either the cam belt (as it was slack) or the tensioners and wanted to keep it in so he could have a look.

Today I received a phone call about the car, and it turns out it was the belt & tensioners, so these were replaced under the warranty (:) THANK YOU) and that solved the noise!

However, the vibration of the 4th gear still remained a mystery to the mechanic, so the gearbox was main suspect as some were recalled at the same period as my car was produced - however after looking at the number on the gear box the number did not match up to the recall list.

So, to solve this he is going to remove the part and inspect in incase it needs renewing - this is not under warranty :S. But, thankfully Derek Slack Motors have insisted that they will foot the bill as the problem should of been fixed when I bought the car, as I did report it then.

The car will be going back in next week for the gear box issue so I will post an update after that.

Have to thank Derek Slack Motors again for their help with this car, they have been spot on from me looking at their cars (not pushy at all!), doing the paper work at a steady pace, throwing in extras if there are inconveniences :) and finally fixing any issues that arise after purchasing with brilliant professionalism!
