charge cooler group buy feeler

Featured Replies

I have been to pace products today enquiring about fmic (front mount intercoolers) and the like. I was told about all the pro's and con's of these and also they suggested a charge cooler installation (due to not wanting to 'modify' the bumper reinforcer). I asked if they would or could consider a group buy and they seemed interested so long as i can come up with around 10 interested people with definate intentions to buy (i'm trying to avoid the 'oohhh i want one but can't afford it' types). the kit will cost about

Too expensive....? need more info......? c'mon people, give me something to go on (no toilet jokes...):(

No seen many charge coolers on 1.8T's. I know Bill had one on his Ibiza for a time but it got taken off and replaced by a FMIC, dont think it was doing it for him.

being realistic, the chargecooler will never be as good as a decent FMIC.. but in practice if it's better than standard and "good enough" then that's all it needs to be I guess.. it does have sideline benefits, like being able to position it where you want it rather than where the airflow is - that would allow a much shorter pipe run between the compressor outlet and throttle body

At least the Octy has plenty of room to easily fit a large pre-rad for the coolant to minimise the effect of heatsoak which will otherwise end up elevating the coolant temperature.

Does anyone make a fmic that doesn't modify the crash bumper/re-inforcer? as i don't like the insurance claim implications if they find out a structural member has been altered.

Why will a fmic be better... surely there are pro's and con's to both......??

ABD Racing make an FMIC that requires no alterations to the front bars at all.

I have one on my Octy vRS, and it is a really good bit of kit.

do you have any pics of the installation, or description of how it fits? I can't see a way through for the pipework without modifying some metal...

Cheers!

If you look at my avator picture, there is the ABD FMIC mounted behind the middle vent.

If you let me have your e-mail address, I'll send a bigger picture for you to see.

The FMIC core mounts to the car in front of the rad below the bar you refer to, and is secured to the car, the return pipe runs up behind the core, so is out of the way, and behind and above the skirt where the two screws fix the skirt to the car.

Jabba's FMIC doesn't need the crash bar modifying...although you can do it if you want more air exposure.

Forge supply a modded crash bar in exchange for your old one....FMIC is already connected...I think.

:iagree: i also have a jabba FMIC and no alteration of the crash bat was needed.

and the FMIC option is hundreds cheaper too not to mention more efficient:)

from what i have been told a shorter inlet route leans towards more bhp and a longer inlet moves towads greater torque instead.

I think Allard do a huge one that does not req Any modding, also has anyone ever used one /have one

Ive had both Allards & Jabbas on my Mk 1 Octy & neithere required mods to the car.

I had the Allard initially & it was fantastic until I fitted the bigger Turbo, we then found the pipeing to the Intercooler was too small a dia & was restricting the Turbo. It was a choice of refabricating all the pipework or as the car was at jabba fitting one on theirs & selling on the Allard one.

Prior to the bigger Turbo with a remap & bigger zorst etc it was running 250 bhp no problem

Had Allards of known my intentions bigger pipeing could have been used so no critisism of Llloyd & the team at Allards

The Jabba one will only fit behind the Octy RS bumper due to the larger plumbing without cutting the back of the Bumper, the Allard one fits on the non Vrs Octy fine
