air con no longer cold on 2 1/2 yr old vrs

Featured Replies

my air con has suddenly stopped blowing cold today. it is slightly cooler than outside air i guess,, but nothing like what it was.

i phoned my local garage who said it would prob need regassing but this would not be in warrenty!!! and be about

You can try 'phoning but would imagine it is like brake pads and washer fluid, and classed as a consumable. Number will be on website iwi

but surely itsa bit new to suddenly loose all its gas?? most other cars i know with aricon have lasted years and years.

iwi it is a gradual process that you don't notice 'till it drops bellow a certain level, I think it depends on how often you use it to how long it lasts, sure a techie will come along with a correct answer tho

no this wasnt gradual, yesterday it was freezing cold as per normal. today wasnt working at all.

thats why i think it should be a warrenty issue, cos its not just normal wear and tear. it was a sudden loss.

What I mean is that above a certain level you will get freezing air, then when the level of gas drops bellow the critical level you won't, so that extra 'drop' breaks the camels back iyswim, might be wrong.... but wouldn't hold out much hope of a warrenty claim unless its more than natural leakage, ie a rupture threw manufacturing defect.

Could be a case of something failing and has dumped the gas charge. Could be a leaky condenser or a fridge hose.

Or.....

Does the system have an LP switch? (techie please). If it has a small leak it could get to a point where the pressure is too low for it to run.

Whatever the case, it will need a pressure test to find the leak unless its a control problem stopping the cooling.

Or the pressure may well be just fine and the mixture flap motor has jammed. Really needs the fault codes read off to point in the right direction.

hmm, well im sure there must be more than natural leakage, cos its not exactly and old car.

ill take it in and see what they say.

doubt its that as the change from cold to hot still works, but its like when the air con is off, ie air temp on cool and hot on hot if you see what i mean.

Lummox is right, it's all speculation until you get the codes read.

You could go through the hassle and expense of a pressure test and regas when it's a controls issue.

I agree with Ross. One way to check is does the recirc stay on or switch itself off?

Evap temp sensor? :D

What does that check for Stu? As you know we have a similar problem on the Ibiza. I've never left recirc on for very long but it's never turned itself off. We're getting nowhere with the local Seat dealer trying to get the problem sorted.

Hello there, i also have a 2 1/2 year old fabia, and for a while the aircon has been making a funny noise like you expect to hear from behind a fridge. I opened the bonnet, found where the leak was coming from! there are 2 pipes going into a metal thing in the bulkhead, and one of them was leaking majorly. Does anyone think this is warranty???

cheers damien.

If the vehicle is in warranty then i dont see why it wouldnt be.

The bit on the bulkhead is the expansion valve.

yeh but surely if its a leak or mechanical failure then there wont be any code to read.

there would only be an error code if electrical surely???

If the pressure is low it will log a fault as there is a pressure switch,

And with diagnostic equipment you can check the compressor, motors nd sensors.

Can I check the compressor etc.. with vagcom? If not can anyone recommended someone in the Yorkshire area who can try and sort the aircon on the Ibiza?

hi people,

after i posted on here! i phoned skoda cannock and they said it was warranty work, because obviously it should'nt fail before 3years warranty was up. They said they didnt have the equipment to fault find or re-charge the gas, so i had to phone Bilston which confirmed they'd do it.

cheers damien

The low pressure switch is the only fault code mine had on it with regards to the aircon. Anyone know a deecent regassing place in the manchester area? Doesn't really sound like a DIY job
