Do Czechs have smaller bottoms?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I raised a question earlier about seat comfort in the Octavia. In pursuit of facts I have been back to the Skoda dealer and VW and measured the seats.

The seats on my Pug 306 are 33cm wide on the flat central bit and 52cm including the side bolsters. Front to back is 45cm

The Golf is also 33cm by 51cm and 50cm fore and aft.

Octavia is only 30cm in the centre and 47cm overall width, it is longer fore and aft at 47cm.

The difference is really quite significant.

Conclusion has to be that the Czech people have small bottoms and long legs :D

A further problem re seat comfort in this comparison is that the Side bolsters on the Pug consist of firm padding only NO rigid plastic within.

The Golf has a detectable plastic side piece, but it is quite well padded.

The Octy has very thin padding the bolster is narrow.

I am afraid that it is looking as if the Octy is just too small in the seat for my missus although we are going to try a drive with a suitable cushion to see if this sorts it out.

It is a huge pity as the car is great otherwise.

It seems strange that more people have not found this a problem. Jan is not overweight, but does have quite wide hips.

I noticed that the seat is noticably narrower in the Octy II than the MkI.

I'm nicely snug in there but I wouldn't want to get much fatter (for a number of reasons , not just seat comfort)

It is interesteing that the MkII is narrower, we have a friend in the village with a Mark I, I will see if I can measure theirs to confirm that. Not that it helps unless

a) We try and buy a good Mk I

or B) it is possible to fit the Mk I seats in a Mk II ??

After being in Czech, I can tell you I did look at a fair few (lady's) bottoms, and they were all very nice and pert. I don't think I spotted one ugly woman in the whole of Czech while I was there. Staying in Bristol town centre the past week brought me back down to earth.

I noticed the seats did look a bit long but the seating I find is very comfortable and doesn't feel narrow. However the best car seat I have ever used was in my renault laguna which also had a craddle setting which was very handy.

I didnt like the drivers seat at first, the sides seemed too tight, but either I have got used to it, or it has loosened up. I had forgotton the problem until I read this post.

I'd agree. We're fairly genourously built, and at first I thought our L&K Octy 2 was going to be too tight by far. But after 4,000 miles (6,000km) it's settled down fine. Just give it time.

As a comfort issue I've had an Octy 1 and 2 and the 1 was by far comfiest and more supportive IMO and i'm a scrawny 11 stone!

I feel there is too much plastic bulking up the seats on the MK2

So far my Octy II is hte most comfortable car I've had. But then its got the leather electirc adjustables with the lumbar support. Wihtout htat, the basic seat was not as good at all.

Have to agree on the subject of comfort. I've finally tried 2 different Octavia models (Elegance & Classic) although I was considering the vRD TDi (couldn't find a demo in the region).

My wife and I found the seat too narrow and I found the shape of the seat at shoulder height gave me severe back ache. A real shame as I thought the Octy was a super car to drive, but I had to admit that the inability to find a comfortable seating position was a combination of the seats and my shape. We're not big people but I do have very broad shoulders and find that a number of VAG and Vauxhall cars give me back ache.

We often carry 3 teenagers in the back and also found that the shape of the transmission tunnel in the back severly limited foot space for 3 people.

Big shame as the Octy is a smashing car. Tried loads of cars and have ended up ordering a Toyota T180 tourer for the same monthly outlay as a vRS Diesel Tourer (with a few options on the Octy to almost match the kit on the Toyota).

Enjoy your Octys folks!

Joking aside, the UK is putting on weight noticeably! And a lot of it seems to around the butt area! But there are other national patterns. I remember people talking about Alfas suiting the Italian shape - short legs and long arms.

Thanks fellwalker,

Are the leather seats structurally different to the standard seats? In particular is the seat wider between the bolsters?

I would be grateful if you could take the measurements, of the flat central bit and the overall width including the bolster. Also if anyone has pics of the leather front seats that would be great. Local dealer has no Leather fitted models to see.

If the seats are significantly different it might be worth the extra.

Hi all,

A further step in the search for a more comfortable seat in the Octy 2.

I had thought that perhaps the electric seat in the L&K might have a different structure to the standard and not have the uncomfortable high plastic frame where the seat height adjustment is. It is this plastic edge which causes pressure on the outside of the thigh.

I phoned local dealer to see if they had an L&K to look at. He said not, but did have an Elegance with leather seats, I asked if these were identical to the L&K seats and he said yes.

So off we go to look, also armed with a couple of cushions to see if this might produce comfort in the standard seat. Leather in Elegance is NOT the same as electric leather seats in L&K :(

However leather slightly more comfortable - better padding ?

Cushion also helped considerably.

Spent some time unsuccessfully trying to find pics of the electric seats to see if the plastic frame is still there.

Another local (ish 40 miles away!) dealer does have an L&K so I will go and have a look at that.

Can anyone here confirm that the electric seat does not have that high plastic edge on the R hand side? If anyone has pics showing the side of the seat that would be great.

Hoping someone can help.

Does this picture help or not? It's the best I can do until my car arrives... (and as it's based on a left hand drive car, this would appear to the equivalent of the right side of the seat)

Many thanks swing,

It unfortunately looks as if the top edge of the plastic frame is exactly the same height as in the manual seat, so it may not help at all.

I think we will still go and look at it, as until she sits in the seat she won't be able to be certain.

Unfortunately the L&K we were going to look at today has been sold :(

On the plus side the 5 degree wedge cushion I had ordered arrived yesterday  so we thought we would have a further trial of the Elegance with the cushion to see if this sorts out the problem.

Result no discomfort at all. The slim cushion just lifts her up enough so the seat edge does not press on sensitive area on outside of hip. Driving and sitting in the car for 1 hour or so (while I did the Sainsbury's shop) was quite comfortable. We have decided to go for the Elegance and forget about L&K.

Our v helpful local delaer allowed us a long trial in a hatch with DSG and an estate with manual and we have set on the estate with DSG.

Some thoughts over the weekend about colours and options and hopefully order on Monday :D

I have an Ambiente with the 'normal' seats - they are more comfortable and supportive than the 'sports' seats in my previous Vauxhall Vectra - used to get out of that after 10 miles with lower back pain.....

Still no piccies to answer the question in the thread title..... :( ;)
