installing a roof screen - how?

Featured Replies

can't decide wether to go headrests or roof screen.

I think the roof screen might be more secure as it will be less noticeable to t-leafs from the outside.

Anyway, how do roof screens fit?.

Do they simply screw into the headlining or do you need to remove the headlining and fit brackets to the roof?

Are they safe in an accident or does the screen pull away from the roof?

Also then wiring? Can this be poked through the headlining and somehow threaded to the door pillar without removing the headlining

To my knowledge, they simply screw to the headlining, and wiring fed through and then down a pillar.

Should be fairly secure if in an accident.

Some have lights on so can be wired in to add some nice ambient lighting to the back of the car.

Bengie has a screen in his IIRC.

Errr... no.

Just white/yellow lights to come on when you open the doors, like the other lights in the headlining.

thought about it some more.

lights are good as my octavia doesn't have them in the rear.

what about the view from the rear view mirro when the screen is down??

I've seen pictures of the cherry cake man, it looks good but what about rear view?

with the screen down the rear view mirror is all but pointless, for a secure fixing you need to put a piece of thin ply above the head lining as the headlining alone wouldn't support the screen. all in mine took about 2hr to fit, that included cutting the wood and running the cables from the headunit and everything.

do you have a sunroof?

if you do then ease the edging strip away from the head lining where it meets the sunroof then you will have enough room to work just about and slip the piece of wood in :) do it with the sunroof open ;)

only trouble i have with mine is that where my piece of wood is slightly to big its only about 1.5 inches from the edge an pulls the head lining out of the edging strip after a while, i need to sort this out, might do it tomorrow :rubchin:

hi bengie,

I don't have a sunroof.

taking into account fitting and rear view mirror; if you did it again would you install roof mount or twin headrest?

i want both :o

but tbh i would probably go for head rest screens if i was to do it again, although they are a lot more expensive!

probably 2-3 times the cost of a roof mount per headrest for half decent ones, not a cheap thing. unless you just want screens stuck to the back of the head rest rather than fitted into the head rests.

We have headrest screens in our Toyota Verso. Whilst they look nice and tidy.... one problem.

The eye line position of the screen (when headrest is all the way to the bottom) my 5 year old has to look up at it a lot and he complains of a stiff neck after a longer journey.

Don't forget that you should really have the headrest at the optimum position for the driver/passenger - not for the person behind viewing the screen !

I thought Skoda sold a roof screen/DVD - have you asked how much supply and fit would be from your local stealer ?

I think I will probably go headrests. I tried our portable DVD player in position on the roof and while it looked nice, it would also restrict the rear view mirror. My worst concern is the roof lining sagging from the weight. Fine if I drive the car nice and slow, but on my own and across dips & crests through country roads that screen is going exert a lot of force on the roof lining.

its fine but you deffo need wood above it, the lining alone would never hold the weight.

mine gets driven hard and has done two trax sessions at silverstone without budging :)

now you's said that I'm thinking roof again:confused:

i don't regret my roof screen but i do think head rest screens are better, tbh i am thinking about doing the headrest screens aswell :o

Head rest screens can be had where the screen tilts indepenadnly of the holder so you can adjust the viewing angle.

Could you tet them installed in the seat back with something like a fold up cover?
