Pug 407 HDI (130bhp)- Any known issues/faults?

Featured Replies

One of my mates (Dave, the one who helped me hump the touring round eastern europe) has a father looking at buying a pug 407 HDI estate

looks a nice car, 05plate i think, and has 69k on it, half leather, cruise etc and service history.

Anything bad or good to report on this car?

I recall that the 406 had issues with the HDI 2.0 (90bhp), basically, it tailled off economy (37mpg 8O) and had running issues.

does anyone work or run the 407 as a daily driver?

Please let me know any faults so I can tell my mate and maybe save him some grief!

thanks

I know of a major fault on the 407, it's a peugeot :P

on a serious note, the engine should be solid as the latest generation of diesels were developed with ford, so are similar to the TDCi units, if not the same.

other than that, I've not really heard of any major problems, but a pug forum would be able to tell you more info.

thanks for that sir! didnt know the HDI and Top Deck Cnvt Installed lumps were developed in tandem..

As for posting on a pug site, I generally dont post on forums for the make of car being asked about, as I find folks on other forums end to be more forthright..

hence posting here, most briskodians seem to have their heads screwed on straight and some tech knowledge:thumbup:

thanks for that chris:D

all going in an email to my mate as we speak!

There are known issues with juddering at circa 40mph in high gears. Its not a particularly common fault though.

I hate them

You end up driving away in an over priced citreon which will deprecaite like a cup of cold sick.

They are as ugly and areodynamic as a clog, and such a boring choice in car people might not see you in there blind spot as you are too dull to fully take in.

The enigine feels like you are trying to tow a herd of unwilling elephants.

If I was you I would invest in an oxen as a more economical and reliable mode of transport.

But I would say that because I was made redundant by peugeot.

The PSA diesel engines were rock solid as far as I am aware, with the exception of some vans where driving at 100 was standard and checking oil levels optional.

If it's the 2.0 HDI 136BHP thats the same engine as in the TDCI focus, and it goes like ****, makes the PD130 seem positively slow.

Think you just gotta be on the look out for electrical problems really, they seem to be the main issue with psa group cars.

Thanks for your input! Sorry they treated you badly, and glad to see you're employed:D

lol!

when you look like me dear, anything with a pulse is greatfully recieved.

Like I said-i'm sorry for what they did to you, but that aint the car's fault is it?more the people who build them

The 2.0 diesel produces 136bhp rather than 130bhp.

Still crap mind.

I know that now, cheers!

6bhp increase from the 406 lump:thumbup:

There is also a new 170bhp 2.2 diesel (iic)

Taken out of the 607 (which is also :pants:)

Emily without being rude the 2.0 136 HDI is the same as the 2.0 TDCI and having driven both I can hapily stay they knock the 1.9TDI & PD engines used in skoda vehicles for 6.

They are on par with and much quieter than the 2.0 TDI's and the older pug engines were reliable as hell. Pug used to and still do make some of the best engines around.

While I agree the fact they got rid of you wasn't nice, please try and be objective rather than just slagging anything PSA off.

Fine.

We had a 407 parked outside for a week before taken into the showroom. I was giving it a clean off and I notised that rust spots had come up on the back.

Nuff Said.

407 hdi 136 is a great car. Have run a few in the past when i worked for Peugeot. As i didnt get laid off for being useless/incompetant/crap/dumb (please delete as you feel may be most applicable...) I dont bear a grudge and would be more than happy to recommend the car / engine.

cheezemonkhai is correct the engine is more than comparable to the VW 130/140PD lump.

sold one to my dad - 20000 trouble free miles later the car regularly achieves 50mpg.

I have to say, the only French clutter i'd own would be a diesel one,

what with Pug, citroen and Renault being partly government owned, and the government subsidies on diesel, they french have put a helluva lot of effort into the oil-burners..

I agree that the 2.0HDI/2.0TDCI is just about the best diesel out there in the midrange- plenty of torque, quiet and frugal...

only better diesel in my opinion is the one in the 535d, but I'd say its not worth the

I cant comment on the new 407. Does look not a bad car.

Personally, I will never have another french car. I have had a ****reon Xantia diesel which was nothing but trouble. A Pug 406 SRi which was in the garage all the time. I also have a had a Pug 406 Coupe 3.0 V6 which was a death trap. I would be driving along, even on the motorway and it would just cut out. Power steering and ABS gone. The local dealers could not find anything wrong....

Please bare in mind that these are *MY* personal experinences of French cars and may not reflect current French build quality. With the exception of Renualt! :D

Excuse me???

So maybe the 407 is not the worst car that Peugeot produces, but it is rapidly deprecaiting as a lot of rep type cars tend to be.

It is not mechanically perfect, and is prone to more faults that perhaps a brand of car better known for its relaibilty.

I find the gaping mouth a little unattranctive, and it does have a vauge similairty to a basking shark.

So it managed 20,000 miles without any big problems - I should hope so to. Costs enough FFS!

As for you discribing me as useless, incompetant, crap and dumb? That is below the belt and what makes you think you are justified in saying that? Were you my employer, or in anyway in contact with him? The reasons for me being made redundant was that I was not enjoying the job, and not suitable for it.

Why would I be made launch coordinator for the 207 if I was any of the above?

I had a citroen xantia for a while and I thrashed the nuts off it and nothing went bang or fell off.

however, I also had a P12 Primera (the one that Renault interfered with) and it literally spent more time at the dealer than on the road.

It went in once for a new wheel bearing and as I pulled out of the dealership, a drive shaft parted company with the CV joint.

Ironically I had a Laguna II hire car while the Datsun was in the menders for 9weeks and bits fell off it on a weekly basis.

Moral of the story: French cars (and Nissans) are a bit of a lottery when it comes to reliability.

BX 19RD - 250'000 miles still going fine except for needing a new fuel pump due to ULSD not having enough sulpher in it to lube the seals.

306 SLDT - 140'000 miles was in top condition until some tw*t wrote it off, although i saw it on the road and found it was a cat c :)

The derv engines are top IMHO.

I'll say one thing for the Xantia, I have never been in a car with such a fantastic ride quality.

Nothing comes close to that magic carpet feeling :P
