Squealing noise - Rear Brakes?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

Posting on behalf of my Dad who's got an 06 Octavia vRS.

A few times now he's noticed a horrible squealing/scraping sort of sound coming from the Rear Offside brake disc, almost sounds like there's a stone trapped between the Disc and disc guard or something, but it's horrible!

Has anyone else experienced this at all? It seems to go after a while, but then return when you don't expect it so it's very hard to pin-point just what the problem is. I've told him to drop it at the Dealer and get them to investigate, but thought this would also be a good place to start!

Just to point out he also fitted 18" New style RS4 alloys from New, - i don't see how they would cause this but thought i should mention it just in case....

Interested to know if anyone's heard of this before?

Thanks again

Nick Goodall.

It shouldn't be dificult to know what causes the noise. 99,9% of cases it's brake pads. It depends on material they are made of and ammount of metal that is mixtured with rest of components that make that area on brake pad that actualy does braking. I've had that issue in many cars I owned and solution is only one - to change brake pads and pray that this time they have less metal mixtured.

Once I've had that problem in brand new VW Golf made in Germany. Problem was on front pads. They've changed them under warranty with pads made somewhere in Eastern Europe (can

I don't think it's actually the Pads as it doesn't just occur under braking, it's literally as the wheel moves around, but it's definitely coming from that area of the car.....

You put some anti-squal etc on the backs of the pads when they were fitted?

Sorry, not sure if i've been un-clear but it's pretty much a brand new car, so hasn't had new brakes or anything yet. It sounds to me like the Brake Disc is catching against the Disc guard - just wondered if this is a common thing? It sounds like a stone gets trapped as you can hear it rattling around but the squeal noise is horrible, literally like a big squealing iron gate or something - you know the noise i mean??

Disk is always touching the pads a bit, you don't have to brake for it. If there is a piece of metal in the pad you can here them without braking. That's the way pads work.

By the way, you can always lift whole the back of the car and roll slowly back wheels, one by one. If you hear the noise take rear wheels off and put spare wheel and rotate slowly. If noise is there, it's pads, if not, it's your alloys. Look inside them and see if there is a mark where it's been touching something.

I still strongly suggest it's pads problem.

Cheers

Seriously please tell me this isn't right? Pad's always touching the Disc??? Do you have any idea what that would do to the MPG, Brake temp and Disc wear???

Will not go further in this... I was car mechanic for 10 years, doing mostly VW. But, never mind, I'm probably wrong, just forget about my previous posts.

Thanks
