Tyre upgrade = insurance hike

Featured Replies

I just got off the phone with Direct Line who said if I go to 225/45/17 from standard 205/50/17 tyres on the Mk1 vRS they want another

Sounds like they are taking the pi55.

Sounds like they are taking the pi55.

Yep. I agree.

As long as they are the correct speed & load rating, it shouldn't make a difference.

personally I'd say direct line are pants! (Previous poor experience)

First point is this, how many people actually know what size tyres are supposed to be fitted to their cars???

If you had bought the octy with 225/45's would you have known they were "incorrect" or just assumed that's the standard?

I can't imagine that an insurance company could really get out of a claim based on tyres fitted to the manufacturers standard wheels so if they fit on the rims (which I believe they do) then I know I for one will be changing to 225/45's when my tyres wear out.

Try a few other companies but I know I've never been asked what size tyres were fitted to my car, and I have seen totally different profile tyres fitted to both mine and my dad's old escorts, both the same year!

I'm sure others will be along to comment soon enough but I'd say DL are taking the yellow stuff!:thumbdwn:

Regards,

Matt

Totally hypothetically of course but had I just changed the tyres on my car yet the alloy wheels were original, and the tyres were within the rims width band, and the speed/load ratings were As good/better then I dont believe I would even call the insurance company to let them know.

Just my thoughts though Im sure the Karma Police will come and arrest me soon ;)

 £120 to change tyre size? what a crock of mucky brown stuff! :thumbdwn:

That's exactly what I thought too. I actually phoned again to make absolutely sure that they knew it was for the standard rims but sure enough they told me the same. Like you say, I would have changed to whatever was on the car when I bought it had it not for this great forum! ;)

I agree that it shouldn't invalidate the insurance however i'm not sure I want to risk it despite how gutting it would be to not have the extra grip for winter playtime! I probably shouldn't have gone to DL in the first place but it was a cheapish quote for a musician.

Would you change them anyway?

:D

I'm glad to have the policy I do. Saves me such angst and worry when it comes to "modding" - Won't have to ring them when I look for 215/40 R17s for the fronts next time round. :D

I would but unfortunately you've told them so they'll have it on record should you need to claim.

I'd tell them to shove it and go elsewhere, they'll either back down or you'll be well rid of them:finger: .

^ My thoughts entirely!

When NU wanted to double my insurance plus more for a postcode change I cancelled and went with Admiral.

Admiral's price for PR1 was 170 quid less than NU's

PR1 is a bit dodgy but it doesnt warrant over 600 a year for a 32 year old with 5NCB driving a group 9 car IMHO, 4 years ago age 28 I paid 500 a year for a group 16 civic FFS, albeit car worth only 4k!!! Anyway, Admiral were 430.

As for the 17 Octy wheels I put on the Fabia got charged nothing by Admiral - on the basis that, being 2nd hand, they were worth less than the brand new stock 16s on the (brand new) car ;)

TBH telling my insurance company about the tyre sizes would be the last thing on my mind. As its been said before they are just tyres and they do a job. Its not like you get a performance increase out of them is it

Dont forget that some mk1 vRS's came from the factory with 225/45 tyres.

Gordon dont worry your local DL repair center uses us for tyres;) and i`m sure know one will be the slightest bit bothered as long as the tyres if affected need replacing, as N**e say "just do it" and dont forget to ask me for prices of tyres:rolleyes:

type393. I trust you've learned a lesson here mate.:uglyhamme

Keep your mods to yourself and people that care.

Remember to keep your fingers away from the trombone when you do anything. "That's how is was when I bought it Guv!" :smashfrea

I'd call again and speak to them as it sounds like she thinks you just changed your wheels for after market wheels.

Call centre people often don't give a toss.
