Skoda's best achievement?

Featured Replies

Been a long time since VW turned them into (nearly) acceptable cars. What do you think is the best thing they have done and why

eg vRS's giving skoda a good name in the hot hatch market.Fabia and Octavia winning lots of awards? Advertising?(still a bit odd).

Personally the fact that the police use them more and more gives me great satisfaction:thumbup: (reason for thread after seeing numerous police ones yesterday).

I see more Octavia taxis than any other type of taxis around here - but I see that as a good thing rather than a bad thing... cos taxi drivers wouldn't want to buy an unreliable car would they? ;)

I think their high rankings in the Top Gear and JD Power surveys

Could not agree more, Here in Madrid the Official Cabs are 80% Skodas, and they are the old ones before the improvments, thats what sold me, and the space and the fact that they are just honest cars.

Last time I was in Madrid, last summer I remember most of the Taxis being the prefacelift MK1 version, proberbly now with galactic miles.

I cant say what I think is the best achievment, but one of the biggest was managing to tempt me to buy my old vRS back in 2001, when I was really sceptical of Skoda at the tiem, and all the comments at work.

Well I'm on my second VRS and after having owned them since 2001, it still puts a smile on my face. Still seems to have an element of exclusivity to it as well, as I don't see half as many as other marques on the road. ;)

Best achievement was getting Colin McCrash to drive and help develop their WRC car :D

IMHO was deciding to build "niche" cars. What I mean is:

Mk 1 Octy - Golf platform but bigger so doesn't get classed with most normal hatches and was cheaper than most "big" cars;

Mk 1 Octy RS - cheapish practical warm hatch improved image;

Fabia RS - making it a diesel warm hatch it made a name for itself again in a niche with little else competing with it.

Superb - cheap, solid & reasonably luxurious barge :D

In many of these sectors Skoda didn't have direct competitors and forged its own niches which people actually liked

This is going to be controversial , but I reckon there's a good case for the Roomster being the most significant achievement as it's the first one to be developed entirely at skoda without an obvious VW counterpart.

The Mk1 octy was basically a hatchback version of the Bora , the Fabia is a Polo with different bodywork , the Superb was just a long wheelbase Passat with a bit of different bodywork and trim.

The Mk2 Octy was more of an independent design but there is still a direct VW alternative in the shape of the Jetta.

Now we have the Roomster (and the Yeti when/if it arrives) which is a Skoda only design and a good car according to all the reviews . Just a shame it looks so odd.

The 2.0 l fabia???

Best achievement?

Brain washing the owners into thinking they own the best car on the road.

The Furby vRS getting into Auto Express Greatest Drives two years running. That's what got me to test drive one and ultimately buy one.

I would say that cos I've got one though. :D

Now now James - there might be the odd person out there like that but most of us are perfectly aware of the relevant merits / disadvantages of our cars against others :P :D I bought my car as it suited what I needed with regard to size, cost and fun - that may change over time and then I will start looking for something that does suit

I dunno where you get that impression from ;)

I think my car is great but that the Audi RS4 is the greatest car on the road.

Skoda hypnotists slipped up there:D

As for Taxi's..good call:thumbup:

The 2.0 l fabia???

have to aggree.....

the 2.0 fabia is the bestest car they ever made nothing ever will be better:rolleyes:

:sofahide:

it's obviously far betterer and fasterer than the vrs model anyway:D

i think its the fabia...its what really shined when it was released.... tho every skoda model out has had nothing but good reviews, its never been slated for anything major. and im sure skoda will sucseed even further with their independant models in the near future. my fav skoda model is probrably the Tudor or the Fabia Design study with its funky roll bar in the boot!:)

Class wins in the RAC Rally for 20 years running, back when the RAC was a proper rally, and not 1 day's milage spun out over 3 days with only a quarter of a proper entry list!

Oh and I don't think my Octy's the best car on the road, but I can't afford a DB9! :(

My comment was slightly tongue in cheek ;)

Best achievement?

The Fabia vRS.

I'd say the Mk1 Octy vRS , its still looks great now , I havent had mine for over 3 years now and I still miss it!

Skoda's best achievement: Making a car(Octy Mk.1 TDI 130) that I couldn't blow up!

Seriously though, I think the Fabia vRS is a great achievement, it did amazing things for the image of diesel cars.
