ICE, speakers, and sizes

Featured Replies

ok, please be patient and bear with me here.

I'm looking to replace ALL the audio equipment in my 1.9SDi classic Octavia (mk1 obviously) Its a noisy diesel, and i had an immense sounding install in my old car.

Now i've searched and re-searched briskoda.net, and mostly haven't found the answers i am looking for. so i hope you dont mind me posting these questions.

When they are all answered, i'll do the work, and take some pics, and host an ICE guide on my webspace. cant say fairer than that? hopefully a real ICE enthusiast or guru will answer these questions

1) What size of speakers fit the front, and rear, of my mk1 Octavia?

I had the grilles off the front and they look to be regular 6.5" ones? if so thats great because i have a brand new set of infiniti comps that should go in there, though the membrane behind it might need pulled back or cut/punctured to make more room?

2) Also i have no rear speakers at all and despite having a poke around have uncovered no rear speaker loom fitted? there DOES appear to be a couple of wires terminated there, but not with a plug or spade. Are there wires there that i just haven't seen?

3) Does the HU need a fascia adaptor if i fit an aftermarket CD HU instead of the tape deck!(i forgot what a tape deck looked like till i saw it in this car!);)

4) Does the Octavia standard fit head unit have a standard ISO connector? i've glimpsed posts about aerial adaptors?

5) No-one seems to mention much other than replacing the very very poor standard speakers. Is the standard wiring loom quite good quality because i've normally replaced them and run my speakers from an amp hidden in the boot. I've always had fiats before mind you, and the wiring, well, lets just say it seems no-one in Italy works as an auto-electrician! yes, its that cheap and nasty!

6) I have a JBL GTO 755.6 amplifier to fit in a stealth install along with a GT4-12" sub and the components i mentioned. i will probably just buy coaxials for the rears. does anyone know where i can get the 4AWG power cable through from the engine bay into the cabin/boot?

i apologise in advance if some of these questions could have been answered by poking around the car. I've only had it a week, and have been working since i got it. In fact tomorrow is my first full day off to fiddle around with it. maybe this ICE post is a little premature, but what the heck, its nearly 3am and its all typed out now! lol

OK, question 6 was answered here

1) Can't remember but i know it has been discussed on here. IIRC it was 13cm components. However the Octy only has space for very slim speakers.

2) If you want it to sound good i'd run your own wire anyway. Esp if you are unsure if that actually is a wire.

3) Don't think so but am not sure about that

4) Yes the connectors are ISO except for the red and yellow (parm and switched lives) being reversed. Also be careful about sending the power out fromthe H/Unit too as this can cause other problems (again well covered on here)

5) Stock wiring won't sound as good as a nice run of OFC copper, but it depends on what you want.

for the rears i'm gonna run my own ofc cable. its only got a metre to go.

its more the fronts. i've already had a look and can get the cable and crossovers inside te door without too much difficulty, but as no-one had mentioned it i thought i might consider being lazy. Its routing the cables all over the car that takes me most time when doing an install.

so i've got a nice new set of 16.5cm infiniti reference comps for the front now. any idea what make/model suits the rear?

i noticed that they sit close to the seatbelt mechanism, and this is the first time space has been much of an issue. i'd prefer coaxials in the rear, because i'm not sure that i want to mount rear tweeters as far forward as the rear doors, and i dont want to cut any plastic, as this is a completely stealth install apart from the HU.

going to be attempting fitting these speakers soon.

just as soon as my cd player comes back from the repair shop.

will keep thread updated. i'm going to try fitting the infiniti comps. had the oe ones out and ized up, and i reckon they'll go in with very little work.

They will fit , but you'll have to hacksaw off part of the door!

It's not an important bit though and as long as you paint it afterwards it should be alright
