whats that noise???

Featured Replies

i currently drive a 2002 octy vrs which has done 109000 ( dont ask)

at around 3000 rpm there is a faint grumble coming from the engine and i have been told it could be one of the tensioners on one of the belts??

Any suggestions??

Yes, have it all checked and replaced.

Have you ever had the belt and tensioners and water pump changed on the car. It is now 4 years regardless of milage and i think 60k is normal for peeps to change.

If that tensioner goes you will probably loose the belt and you can kiss the engine goodbye.

Sorry.

Absolfragginglutely as CM says, particularly since AIUI it's inspect every service from the belt having done 40_000.

Thanks For The Info,

Is This The Timing Belt You Are Talking About Or All The Belts And Tensioners,

Any Info On Cost??

Belt, tensioners, and water pump if the one you've got has the plastic impellor.

YEAH CHEERS WILL PRICE THEM UP.

iM NOT VERY GOOD WITH ENGINES UNFORTUNATLEY, COULD YOU ELLABORATE ON THE PLASTIC IMPELLOR

If you're "not good with engines", this is most assuredly a garage job. It involves locking shafts in alignment (on anything I've worked on) and blocking up the end of the engine to remove an engine mount.

Garage It Is Then, Hopefully This Will Cure The Very Small, But Annoying Grumble Noise!!

Cheers

About £300 for the lot on a TDI Octy is what i was quoted from a 3rd party using genuine parts.

About £185 using OE quality parts.

Cost of engine repairs from that going, at least £2000.

I would book it in for the whole lot to be done yesterday or sooner if you can.

Where in the UK are you and somebody here might be able to reccomend a garage.

Good News I Have Priced Up The New Belt, Tensioners And Water Pump From Eurocarparts And Total Of £88, A Friend Of The Family Can Fit Them At The Garage He Works At For A Small Charge Of Some Beer,

Result :-)

Moved here from the Tech Shed.

Rich yes do take the advice above. Check if the belt has been changed in the car's life, if it hasn't it's at least 25k miles overdue, and should be done ASAP.

Yep the Eurocarpart/GSF tensioner kit is £85 and the waterpump £35. Don't forget to get some proper VW coolant for refilling the system once you have taken the water pump out.

Until this has been done I would try and drive the car as little as possible and if you do to take it very easy.

I Have Been Told That It Shoild Be Ok Until 120000??

Am In The Process Of Getting It Booked In Tho

Do You Think That The Noise Could Be Cos Of The Belt And Tensioner

Yes it is quite possible that is it that or the water pump, and no seriously those belts are not OK up to 120k.

That was the official line at the start, however many have broken well before 120k and it is now change at 4 years irrespective of mileage or a much lower figure. (80k maybe, but most change at 60k).

If the waterpump stops or a tensioner breaks you will destroy the belt and the engine will require a major rework. Ditto if the belt snaps.

Please please do that ASAP if it has not been done before.

Cheers For All Your Help With This One, Prop Save The Ocy From An Early Grave

Thanks Again

Ok until 120_000 - If and only if you have evidence of it having been done at around 60_000.

Yes I think the noise could be the tensioner (or a plastic water pump, failure of which will have similar effects to failure of the tensioner). This happened to my old Xantia, with the engine at about idle revs, and the failed belt caused a broken camshaft and cam bearings. The best estimate for repairs was over £1_000, before the head came off to see if there were any bent valves or chipped pistons.

Bottom line - it's really not worth trying to skimp on these jobs.

Of course there is no guarantee this is where the noise is from, but if a mechanic suggested a tensioner and you have not had the things changed from new, they will need doing anyway.

Esp for the price you are talking about, which is a damn good one i would think.

No one answered the plastic impellor bit. The stock parts from the factrory have plastic blades on the water pump (mine fractured and stuffed the engine, luckily was on warranty)Aftermarket parts usually come with metal blades, as this has been a common problem. thats why most people end up getting the original waer pump changed at the same time as the belt, saves labour charges in the long run.
