octavia problem

Featured Replies

hi i drive a y reg octavia 1.8t and it has developed a fault. when the ignition is on the hazard warning switch/relay clicks randomly, i have replaced this but it hasnt solved the problem. i have an idea that the indicator stalk may be at fault. has anyone had this problem and whats involved in removing the stalk??

any help would be aprreciated

many thanks

The hazzard warning relay was/is a failrly common fault on early cars like yours and I'm suprised changing it hasnt cured the problem.

To remove the stalk you need to remove the airbag and steering wheel.

If your car has ESP there is a potentially tricky part with the steering anlge sensor but if the car has ASR it is simple.

Instructions on removing the steering wheel in an Octavia/Golf can be found here: Cruise: Stalk

Note that you dont have to disconnect the airbag wiring from the steering wheel as there is usually enough spare wire to sit the airbag in the gap between the middle of the wheel and top of the rim to rest the airbag while you remove the wheel itself (hope that makes sense)

thanks for the speedy reply and brilliant info. my car does have asr so hopefully it will be simple and yes you make perfect sense about the wiring.

cheers

if you are going to mess with the airbag in anyway make sure you disconnect the battery and wait for around an hour before carrying out any work. if you dont and earth out the airbag wiring i will set it off in your face.

sorry about spellin, it will set the air bag off.

thanks for the info. i managed to take the airbag off without it setting off :) i have tried the indicator stalk now from the girlfriends mk4 golf and has cured the problem.

Maybe now is a good time to retrofit cruise control as you will be buying the stalk anyway?
