Fitting a six speed box to a vRS

Featured Replies

Any one done it ? is it possible ? i know some people will say get a BAM engine and box..... but I don't want to go that far.

a few have done it, you will need the box from either a cupraR or a anniversary golf mk4 as the TT/S3 boxes won't fit.

like i said in the other thread if your looking at nearly 300bhp in the future its way easier and cheaper to stick in a 225/210 engine and box than make a 150/180 engine get those figures, believe me :o

TT/S3 box will fit just fine but the transfer box needs blanking off. Also when changing the gearbox driveshafts also need changing as they're equal length on the 6spd, which also has the benefit of reducing torque steer.

Cheers,

Don't want to go as far as 300bhp, would be happy with around 230 - 240 max (insurance reasons)

Gonna miss the 6 speed box from my Bora, and the A4 has one too so I'm used to the extra gear on motorways, for cruising etc.

You wont miss the extra gear.

in a FWD 1.8T 6 speed box the final drive is the same as the 5 speed box. So you'll still be doing (for example) 70mph at 3000rpm, regardless of which box you have.

You'll just have to change gear more times to get there.

Ah ok fair enough, don't need one then... cool

I think its only really worht it if you have 240bhp+ and wish to reduce torque steer.

Or if you just want to be flash.

do a swap on the bora and sell it with the 5 speed ;)

i take it the bora is a diesel as i don't remember there being a FWD 6 speed petrol bora so the gear ratios would be completely wrong for a petrol engine.

Personally I dont' agree with some of this....probably cheaper but easier...that's debatible.

Whole engine and gearbox have to sourced...probably requires the drive shafts...perhaps wiring loom....you then have to take out original engine/gearbox etc....then fit everything again....match up ECU....then get it mapped.

to a qualified mechanic it's a fairly straight forward swap as all the fitments are the same. seeing as the engine would probably have to come out to fit stronger rods and pistons, then you would need new injectors, maf, inlet, turbo, manifold, fmic, pipe work, air-box, gear box, clutch, flywheel, gear linkages, downpipe, cat etc etc which all have to be sourced seperatly where as you could find 1 crash damaged rear shunt car and get all the bits in one go(apart from the clutch obviously). also making after market bits properly can be a nightmare with many unforseen problems that an engine swap wouldn't have.

then costs wise your easily looking at 10k to have all the bits supplied, fitted and mapped where as if about 300 was your target ad engie suppplied and fitted wouldn't be half that.

The Bora was a PD 150,

Mod wise things will be done on a bit by bit basis, as the car will be used quite a bit between me and thw wife, shuttling the dogs around.

Its a very expensive way to get a 6th gear, I would try living with it for a while before you shell out. The std box will be fine for the sort of power you are taliking about. Watch the ratios when swapping boxes, I know 2 Briskodians who bought 6 speed boxes & following a discussion at the pub it appears the ratios are very different as to why it never got concluded, my guess was that one came from a diesel which is lower revving but thats only a guess

Yeah, My PD had that much low down grunt I could do 1st to 3rd to 6th no problem

You can do that in the Octy vRS. You can even do 1st to 5th if you beast 1st to the redline

erm .... don't think the engine an clutch would last long if I did that on the vRS
