Broadband Query - No internet, but email is OK

Featured Replies

Hi Guys & Girls

At work we are on BT broadband. When we moved premises, BT sent us a BT2700HGV router thingy, which is plumbed into the LAN.

Yesterday morning, a very strange thing happened. We lost internet access, but the email is fine, sending and receiving without a problem.

Spoke to our support chaps today, and they suspected a DNS change, as email doesn't require DNS, and recommended I phone BT. They asked me to open a DOS box and try pinging the BBC website, which worked fine, indicating it wasn't a DNS problem. 45 minutes later, after checking the router settings with them etc, still no further forward. :(

After drawing a blank, they have recommended we try another router. PC support guy is coming Monday with a Draytek one to try.

Any ideas from the esteemed tech guys and girls here?

Thanks in advance

Chris

Web proxy. Your internet connection is obviously absolutely fine - no need for new hardware as far as I can see.

As far as I can tell from a google search BT don't use transparent web proxies but maybe you have one configured in your browser. Look under tools/options/connections/lan settings and if not set for "direct connection", try that.

Email will certainly require DNS unless it's entirely within your LAN.

we had alot of problems wednesday at work when microsoft released IE 7 and we all installed it. Our email system still worked fine. One quick call to our IT guys and this was sorted, not sure what they did though.

Thanks Nick:thumbup:

I'll have a look at that when I get in Monday

Only two of our machines are on IE7, the others are still on IE6, but they couldn't get t'internet either.

Will be interesting to see what the Tech says when he comes Monday.

Update for you: It was a two part problem.

We were using the router BT sent to us, a BT2700HGV. When the new Draytek router was plugged in using the PC supprt guy's laptop, although it was showing that a connection was there, it still wouldn't show web pages. A quick phone call to BT resulted in some new DNS server numbers. Enter them into the Draytek config, and it's fine.

Then we tried reconfiguring the BT router with the same new DNS numbers, didn't want to know. Plugged the Draytek back in to our network, everything is fine. So obviously there is a fault with the BT router, as well as the DNS issue.

Just phoned BT, and they are sending a new router out.

Thanks for your input.

All the Best

Chris
