Does anyone know how ASR works?

Featured Replies

What lights would show up if it went wrong??

I'm trying to find out for a mate. He has a Y reg Bora TDI and its got the ASR and ABS lights on with the brake warning light flashing at him (the red one that comes on when the handbrake is on). Initially thought it was low brake fluid but checked that and it's fine, if a little over-full.

Looked through his and my owners manuals to find out what ASR is and can't find a mention of it anywhere.

I know it drops engine power when you start to wheelspin but thats about it.

Can anyone shed any light at all??

Cheers

I believe it brakes slipping wheels, or at least cuts power to a point.

If the warning lights are on it means the safety systems are turned off due to a fault.

The ASR is the traction control for wheel slippage. If the control unit notices the front wheel(s) slipping then it cuts the engine power until the wheels regain traction. In normal operating conditions you would also get the ASR light on the dash insert flashing to say "LIGHTEN YOUR RIGHT FOOT" :eek:

The ESP side of things which iirc was an option on the Fabia vRS works slightly differently. This again measures the wheels speeds and if it senses a wheel moving quicker than the others, ie aquaplaning, ice, skidding, it will brake the relevant wheels so that you stay in total control of where you are pointing the vehicle.

If boths lights are flashing I would get in into the nearest main dealer for diagnosis asap as you do not have any safety systems working on the vehicle. So only hydraulic brakes controlled by your brake pedal pressure. Usual cases of this are ABS speed sensor faults especially in the rear where they are subject to more adverse working conditions.

I know ESP is very different because it has a lockable diff too, hence being optional and costing quite a bit.

I think the car is going to a dealer this week some time. I was asked to see if i had any idea what was wrong with it. I thought it could be a sensor somewhere because both ABS and ASR lights were on and as the car's covered 90k it could be.

The thing that confused me the most was the flashing brake warning light. Never seen that before.

I think it's crap that neither owners manuals had an explaination of ASR, in fact neither had a mention of it!!!! Plenty about ESP, TCS etc etc etc. Most infuriating :mad:

Google - it's pretty good.

Traction Control

I think TCS is just a different acronym for ASR....

TCS = Traction Control System

ASR = Anti-Slip Regulator/Acceleration Slip Regulator

Am I right?

I believe so!! I understood it to be Anti Slip Regulation.
