Engine for VW Caddy? Ideas.

If you had a VW Caddy with a knackered engine, what would you consider to be the best "decent" engine conversion to go in it, that is not going to break the bank (ideally say a

I will pass those suggestions on. Is the "KR" and "9a" the engine codes like the ATD/ASZ/BaconLettuceTomato the Fabia uses?

Did it start off as a petrol or Diesel?

As above the Golf mk3 or Passat 16v engines are good and cheap, or how about a 100bhp 1.4 16v (Polo, Lupo, Arosa) with short ratio gearbox?

Nice engine (we've got one in a Lupo) but a bit peaky for a caddy. I'd go for the 2 litre petrol 16v, a TDi, or a 1.8T.

Well, it's an old petrol - suspect a 1.3? Apparently it's well knackered. But any donor engine must be fairly old and work easily with what the caddy has originally - so one from the same age would be ideal. I'm not sure on the age, but I suspect it's around a D to F plate.

No they don't! they are flatter than a fart! Thats why VW dropped it from the GTI and replaced it with the 2 litre!

I drove the Leon 1.8 20v as a hire car. Felt fine to me, more than adequate for an everyday car.
