Big Problems!!

Featured Replies

I've got a 1999 Octavia GLXi and it's sudenly started 'juddering' real bad at the beginning of each gear. When I put my foot down on the clutch, it whines while the car is moving.

Also, a few days ago, I reversed and put it back into first gear, and the car would not move. I had to put it back into reverse and then into first again for it to move.

Any ideas what is wrong?

I'm pannicking!

Thanks

First bit sounds like worn clutch, second bit like worn synchromesh. You'll need to get it looked at...

thanks.

does a worn clutch usually mean a new clutch?

If so, how much are we looking at to fix?

I'm afraid the clutch plates are wearing parts, so once they're worn out, they need to be replaced. The cost would depend on whether you did it at a main dealer or one somewhere like Kwik-Fit or National, but it'll be at least a few hundre quid, I'm afraid. The good news is gear selection issue could well clear up once the clutch is replaced...
